of 2022) and it BSODs quite frequently (at least a couple times a
week). The 7720 I used previously did not have any such problems. One
thing I've noticed with the 7770 is that it's easy for the power cord
to work just a little loose and that seems to be when it has the most
trouble, evidently not enough power to work correctly in "plugged in"
mode but not so little it switches to battery mode.
Hello all, as far as I know, Dell use to put 2 types of sound cards in
thier laptops, Realtec and Intel. You can research if one o these is
more compatible with JAWS. Also, if JAWS is not good configured just
can get problems.
Nice day!

I’ve been using Dell business class machines for over 20 years. I have occasionally run into sound card issues with the installed Realtek drivers. My latest Vostro laptop had the problem where the sound card would deactivate after around twelve seconds of inactivity. At that point pressing a key would cause a small but noticeable delay from when the key was pressed until the screen reader responded to that key press but there wasn’t that annoying clipping or cutting off of the first syllable or phoneme. In my case the Silenzio program from Stefan Kiss corrected the problem. If memory serves it was more noticeable with NVDA than it was with JAWS.
Note: the pages on Stefan’s Web site which I have visited are written in the Slovak language. You’ll need to use your browser’s translation capabilities or a third party tool like Google Translate to translate the site into your preferred language.
You can also download the program directly from the previous link.
For the most part I have had no long-standing issues with the Dell machines I have used. However, I know that there have been a lot of Dell machines produced over the years and others may well report worse experiences.
As an aside I did some investigating on the Realtek Web site to see if I could locate either a form or an email address to submit support queries. On March 16 of last year I sent the following email to pctech@..., an email address which I found on their Web site. I received no bounce back or error message from the email which I sent. To date I have not received a response. Here is what I wrote.
Subject: Problem With TimeOut Issues With Your Sound Driver
Hello.
I am a visually impaired computer user and am reaching out to report an extremely serious problem with your sound drivers. People who are blind or visually
impaired use an application known as a screen reader which allows a user to access what is on the screen using synthetic speech, Braille or both. The problem
that blind people are experiencing is that many computers with your sound drivers tend to time out and switch off the sound card after a period of silence.
In my case the timeout occurs approximately twelve seconds after my screen reader has last spoken. Once the sound card switches off pressing another key
causes a noticeable delay from the time the key is pressed until the time speech is heard from my speakers or headset. Some computers even cut off the
first syllable of whatever the screen reader was speaking. This causes major problems and significantly decreases our productivity. An appropriate analogy
would be to imagine your monitor going dark after ten seconds of inactivity. Imagine your frustration where pressing a key at that point might cause your
monitor to not become instantly enabled or having your screen flicker for a second after pressing the key. If you experienced such a problem I’m sure you
will agree that you would find it not only to be extremely frustrating but you would conclude that this would be totally unacceptable. This is extremely
problematic and I am asking that Realtek provide a solution. As an example, could a utility be provided to allow a user to increase the timeout period
or, better yet, disable it entirely? Your prompt attention to this problem would be tremendously appreciated not only by me but by so many computer users
who rely on screen reading technology who are currently being tremendously inconvenienced by this problem.
Many thanks.

It has to be impossible for RealTech to not be completely aware of this problem
They could put a toggle in a menu to allow us to just turn it off.
Guess what. They don’t give a flying damn.

The Microsoft drivers may not have all the bells and whistles that the Realtek drivers do, but I would much rather have trouble free drivers than all those added features that I can't use because the Realtek drivers are not accessible.

Regarding the Dell Support Assist, I can’t figure out how to access it with Jaws.
I have a number of updates waiting.
I often get notices about those updates, but can’t seem to access them.
At the same time, I remember doing a Dell update once that really messed with my sound drivers, so I’m holding off on that a bit, since things are working well here.

impaired use an application known as a screen reader which allows a user to access what is on the screen using synthetic speech, Braille or both. The problem
that blind people are experiencing is that many computers with your sound drivers tend to time out and switch off the sound card after a period of silence.

Hello all,
Wondering if anyone is still having issues with Dell computers and JFW?
I have two folks with latitude models that are having sound card issues as well as the machines running hot.
They are both JFW users.
Thoughts?
Thank you.

Hello all,
Wondering if anyone is still having issues with Dell computers and JFW?
I have two folks with latitude models that are having sound card issues as well as the machines running hot.
They are both JFW users.
Thoughts?
Thank you.

The dell update programme is a little tricky but if you move around with tab and the arrow keys, you should be able to work it out.
I Use it quite regularly but another way is to go to the Dell web site.
If you Google your model number e.g. for me it is:
Dell Inspiron 5510 downloads
The first hit should be support for Dell Inspiron 5510.
Go to that link and then on that page there is a check for updates.
It will check if Support Assist is installed, if not it will install it.
Then you can find it in your downloads if not.
Maybe make a favorite of this Dell page.
Install Support Assist, go back to the page and then click the check for updates.
I Normally put a place marker on this button.
After a few minutes, go back to the place marker and up arrow and it should tell you any updates.
Just be aware, if there are any bios updates, it won’t install automatically, you have to run them manually from your downloads folder.
You will need ac power on otherwise bios updates won’t install.

I appreciate your offer, but I would first like to see if I can do the Dell updates here myself, once I get some clear steps as to how to carry out the process with Jaws.
This way, I won’t have to inconvenience others when the next updates roll around.
Thanks again, though; I really appreciate the offer!

At the same time, I remember doing a Dell update once that really messed with my sound drivers, so I’m holding off on that a bit, since things are working well here.

Thanks, Mike.
This is exactly what I needed.
Will save for sure.
My only fear about all this is that I’ll have a repeat of what happened to be once before.
I did some Dell driver updates, and, for whatever reason, they really messed with my Jaws speech.
I can’t remember what I did to get things back to where they should be, but it was not easy.

I have a Precision Workstation 5820 with 3 hard drives and 2 SSD. There is room for at least one more hard drive and 1 SSD without installing an extra drive cage or controller. There is room for a half height or full height DVD. I got it with 32GB ECC Ram and it can expand to 64 and I think to 128gb. It came with 2 4 monitor video cards, one of which I pulled for my wife’s machine. Front panel Sd, USB A and C as well as plenty on the back panel with 1GB Ethernet.
Only initial problem was Jaws and the onboard sound card. When I installed a separate sound card the video crashed. A new MB, return to the factory, loss by FedEx and returned damaged, another new machine and same problem. They finally replaced the video card and it is working with only Windows 11 annoyances.
I would suggest getting the Gold service plan. You get North America support with someone who has good to great English. With my previous system I had the same tech for several calls. That was great. Since I live in a rural area, the 24 hour response time rarely happens for onsite service.
