What do you mean by default destination? If you mean where notepad stores files, I don't believe that there is one, it just uses the last place you saved a file for its default. So if you need notepad to always save files in a particular location, you just have to make it a habit to always save files there.

there is not an actual setting that will change the default place files are stored for Notepad. But there is a little fact to know about that can probably help you accomplish what you are trying to do.

Now I can not say if this will work in Windows 11 since I am still running Windows 10, but I do not see a reason it would not still work. When saving or opening files in Notepad, the software automatically uses the last directory that was accessed through the program. For example, if you last saved a notepad file in a folder in your Dropbox, then the next time you saved a file, it would also be saved in that same folder in your Dropbox. And the same would go for opening files. I do not save any files in my documents. I always save all of my files in a folder of a cloud service like Dropbox or One Drive. I do this just in case my computer crashes or the hard drive dies. If this happens, I do not have to worry about my files because I know they are safe and backed up in the cloud. Hope this helps. People tend to focus on their user data only, if they focus on anything at all as far as backups go, but you also have to think about how much time and effort you have put in to creating the computing environment you prefer on your own machine. Having all your user data backed up is great, but if you want to be able to get everything back you really need to be taking full system image backups which include your user data. I have had a one-man home and small business computer support business since 2008. Storage drives fail. And for anyone using SSDs, they are orders of magnitude more difficult, and more expensive, to have recovered by a professional data recovery service. Having full system image backups to recover from should disaster strike is even more essential for those using SSDs. When you go to save a file and press control s to save it, shift tab a couple of times to get into the dialog box that has places to save it. You can also shift tab once more to go into a drop down box to move up one level. For example, if what is in the box are your folders in documents, and you want to put it in dropbox or on the desktop, shift tab and arrow up or down to find the place you want to put it.

For Notepad, once you choose a folder or area to put it, if you don't change that, every document you save in it will go there. I like to have a folder I call "Moving" and everything goes into it. Then I can go back later and move it where I want it to be. I don't have to fiddle with getting to a different folder each time. I just go to the Moving folder and cut the document and paste it into the folder I want it to be in. Karen -----Original Message-----

I use Casper by Future System Solutions. I like it because all of its backups can be used to either restore a system to a blank drive or you can grab just the files you need from the backup using nothing but File Explorer. It also has the ability to make bootable backups that boot into your backuped Windows, so you get immediate access to your programs and files.
