moderated Creating website with JAWS
Thabo Baseki <THAB0.BASEKI@...>
Good day friends!
Thank you for adding me to the mailing list. This is my first post to the group, and I am excited, I can have my inquiries head.
I have never created a website before, and I want to learn how to do it. Where can I start? Is the place accessible with jars? Some people were telling me that I should use notepad, how is that effective?
Thank you for all the suggestions in advance!
Best regards
Thabo

The first step if you want to do it yourself, rather than depending on a program that uses pre-written templates is to learn HTML code at whatever level you wish.

NotePad will only be useful if you know the coding required.
There are tons of online tutorials to learn how to create websites.
I did it so long ago that I don't have specific ones in mind.
I think NotePad++ may have some templates, but someone else I'm sure will chime in.
Enjoy,

Hi. I feel like learning html would be the best place to start. I haven’t yet created a website myself, but this is all good stuff to know for various reasons. Check out this page, there are a great many useful things here, including a set of details lessons. https://www.w3schools.com/html/

There is also a program called Druple. Don’t know how accessible it is with JAWS.

Hi. For users of JAWS the third party Leasey add-on has a feature called the HTML Assistant. While it's not a full Web authoring tool you can bring up different HTML tags from a list and insert them into a document. Tags can include headings, links, etc. More tags are being added in version 5, due out soon.

I use WordPress for my website as well. You can create a website with a variety of features using WordPress plugins.

Hi Thabo!
I have used WordPress, Drupal and learned some HTML. For sure, WP is the best. Learning some HTML is helpful too, but not critical. Drupal seems to be more of an enterprise CMS. WP can do it all; accessibly too. Use its “classic editor.” Get a book on using WP from Bookshare.

Is it necessary to use a paid Wordpress account or is creating free Wordpress sites just as accessible with Jaws? And any specific Wordpress book recommendations? Thanks, ~Ann

Personally, I like having my own domain. I pay a yearly fee to Dreamhost to host my WordPress site. Dreamhost has a one-click WordPress install option. I have a new WordPress with JAWS for Windows book I just released. I’m not sure if I’m allowed to post a link but you can find it on my website and I provide complete support. Whatever you decide, I think you’ll love WordPress. CathyAnne --- CathyAnne Murtha Access Technology Institute www.blind.training cathy@... Hi Ann!
There are some accessibility advantages when you have your own domain as opposed to a free domain hosted at wordpress.com. I use bluehost.com; and they have a one-click install of WP. I will not go into these accessibility advantages here, but there are more than a few. Plus, having your own domain and a hosted site gives you full control, more flexibility and it is pretty inexpensive.

I know I’m 2 months late to the dance. However, I’ve always enjoyed Kathy’s books. There was one on WordPress by another author and they spent most of the time thanking people for buying their book and not enough time dealing with the meat of the topic. Also, since I used to do audio and video editing I could tell that the book was heavily edited. If you are going to edit something, please do not make it so obvious.
