Moderated Could use a little help from my jaws friends.
Ron Kolesar
Hello, to all.
I have a wave file to play for new mail notification. Now, this wave file works fine when I use both the Narrator and NVDA screen readers, but not when I have jaws up as my screen reader. Now, my audio player is Winamp. Now a audio file shouldn't have anything to do with a screen reader, at least you would think they wouldn't. So, why can I get a small wave file for new mail notification to play in narrator and or in NVDA but not in jaws? I've been back and for with the disability hotline and we freedom scientific. So, I'm asking my friends who like myself are using jaws as our main access to our computer. Very thankfully Yours, Ron Kolesar |

Ron,
May I ask why you're trying to control the new mail notification via screen readers anyway? You can change this, universally, under Windows for virtually all email clients (and definitely all the Microsoft ones) in Control Panel, Sound, Sounds Tab of the Sound Dialog. Locate New Mail Notification then select it. Then navigate to the dropdown that should be showing Windows Notify Email.wav as the default. Two controls beyond that is a Browse button that allows you to browse for a WAV file of your choosing to replace the default Windows theme sound (or the sound used by the non-default theme you may be using). Immediately before that Browse button is a Test button which, after you've chosen the replacement, you can navigate back to in order to ensure that it's been set correctly. Afterward, just OK out. -- Brian - Virginia, USA - Windows 10, 64-Bit, Version 22H2, Build 19045 If you cannot or will not imagine the results of your actions, there’s no way you can act morally or responsibly. The audio file is just to let me know if I have new mail. I’m not trying to control the new mail notification via a screen reader. What is weird is that if I’m using my computer via NVDA and or in Narrator, the sound effect for new mail notification works. But if I’m using the computer via jaws, the audio file doesn’t go off. Now, I don’t know what a screen reader has to do with a small wave file to go off to begin with. I hope that answers your question. Ron

The wave file that I want to go off is in the sound schemes both under desktop mail notification as well in new mail notification. So, its in the correct places. The weird thing is that it will only work if I’m using my computer via the screen readers narrator and or NVDA. It won’t work if I’m using my computer via the jaws screen reader. Just would like to know why this is, since a wave file has nothing to do with a screen reader. The screen reader is only to read to us what’s up on the monitor. Hope this helps out. Ron

Can you play the wav file using WinAmp and Jaws without your email program? TJ On 11/20/2022 3:30 PM, Ron Kolesar wrote:

I had this same problem. Try associating this new audio file of yours with the generic Notifications or System Notifications Events in the Control panel. That was the only way I could solve this. Cordially, Curtis Chong -----Original Message-----

I think I may have the answer to your problem. Is audio ducking on? If you do the layered keystroke then D for ducking do you want to make sure it is off. With a short male sound if you are using jaws and the mail comes in, it will put that mail sound in the background. Try that and let me know.

Yes. It works everywhere except when I want it to work. But only when I’m using the pc with JAWS.

Hi Ron,
Is it possible that it's playing but, the volume is so
low you can't hear it? I've noticed that many of the sounds in Win10 &
11 the volume is very very low. I had to run all the defaults sounds
through Sound Recorder of an older Windows system or Switch to increase the
volume.
Take care. Mike. Sent from my iBarstool. ----- Original Message -----

Howdy:
This is definitely a mystery. Since it happens only when JAWS is running, you might think about escalating this with Vispero.
