Moderated Changing versions of JAWS without sighted assistance

John Doering

Hello:

I am having problems with my Netflix DVD list on www.dvd.com.  I am using the latest versions of Windows 10 with Chrome and the latest version of JAWS 2023.  Under each title you have in your list there should be 3 links to either move that title to the top of your list, move it to another position in the list, or delete the title from your list.

For me, all I get under each title in that area is JAWS saying “link bullet, bullet, bullet”.

I have called Netflix tech support and reported the problem but did not get any help.

I thought of trying to see if an older version of JAWS still works.  I have several older versions still installed in my computer.  Is there a way of switching versions without sighted help?

To change versions, I believe I would need to close 2023 then start the older version, but once 2023 is closed I will not have speech to find the other version I wish to start.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

I assign each version with it's own hot key for launching, for example I have both then 2022 and 2023 versions installed, for the 2022 version I have alt+control+shift+J and its hot key to start it, for the 2023 version the hot key is alt+control+shift+K.

Another way is after exiting one version of JAWS, press the Windows key, then type JAWS with the version then press enter, so to launch the 2022 version, you'd type "JAWS2022" then press enter.

Finally, before exiting one version of JAWS, put the focus on the icon for the version you want to run, now exit JAWS, the cursor will still be on the version you want to run, so just press enter to launch it.

Hope that helps.

For what it's worth, I have always found it useful to keep the current version of JAWS installed along with the new version until I feel confident that the new version is ready for daily use.

Right now there are some issues with the 2023 version so I am still using the 2022 version for daily use.

Really? I just tried it, and predictably, JAWS 2023 still ran.

If you do, the keystroke windows are, for the run dialog box, then type in JAWS2022, it will bring up Chaz 2022, if you type in JAWS2021, it will bring up the 2021 version. If you need some speech, when you do not have jaws, the keystroke control windows enter will turn on narrator, it’s the same key stroke to turn it off again

John,

There are at least two fairly simple ways to open any version of JAWS after you close the currently running JAWS.

  1. Create a shortcut for the version you wish to use. Place focus on the relevant JAWS icon on your desktop and press alt-enter to open properties. Tab through until you land on the shortcut field. Note that if you just type a letter or number here, Windows will automatically add alt-control. Thus alt-control-j would be your shortcut if you type just “j.” Windows will probably say you don’t have permission, but then it will give you an Okay button. Press spacebar, and suddenly permission is granted. Then tab to “Apply,” then shift-tab back to “Okay.”

  1. Prepare for this method by going to your desktop and pressing j as many times as you have JAWS versions. Note the sequence, e.g., two presses might bring up JAWS 2020. In the future, after closing JAWS, you could return to the desktop with Windows key-d, press control-home to go to the top of the desktop, and then press j the number of times needed to get to the desired version. Then press enter to start JAWS. This is a little-hit-or-missy for me, but it works in a pinch.

I believe there’s a third method, but I haven’t got into the habit of using it. As I recall, type Windows key-r to open the Windows run dialog, then type JAWS and the version number you want. Press enter, and JAWS should start speaking. But I may have a detail wrong here, so wait for someone to post who uses this method.

That method with the run command is right.

Go to your desktop,

Type windows r,

Then

Jaws followed by the version you'd like to use.

Also, about creating a shortcut.

If you go to your jaws and version and hit alt enter as previous suggested by Adrien, you can then hig alt k to get ot the shortcut key.

After arriving at the shortcut key, you should hear shortcurt none.

Then, press whatever letter or number you'd like to use.

I normally use the run command to open the version I have decided to use.

So,

Windows key with the letter r,

Then jaws2022.

Thanks,

Justin

Hello.

I would use the run (windows + r) command followed by jaws+ version number as suggested by a couple of others. It’s almost foolproof, unless you make a typo of course.

But nobody has pointed out yet, that you have a perfectly  usable screen-reader built into windows that you can activate if you find yourself in a position of needing to do something without JAWS, and still want speech.

Use ctrl-windows-enter to activate narrator, and then you can mess around on the desktop, run task manager, or do whatever you like. Sure, it’s not a replacement for JAWS and won’t function as well in most areas, but definitely more than sufficient for running programmes, stopping a programme that’s not working, and so on.

Hi John,

jaws create shortcut example - Google Search

How do I create a shortcut with JAWS?
1. Press Windows+D to go to the Desktop and then press letter J until you get to the JAWS program icon.
2. Press ALT+ENTER on it to open properties.
3. Then press TAB to reach the “shortcut key” edit box,
4. then just type a letter J here.
5. Press TAB to move to the “OK” button and press SPACEBAR on it.
Apr 20, 2022

#notes:
[4 - the normal shortcut key for Jaws is ( control alt j )
when you are in the shortcut key” edit box:
a. if you only press one key like ( j ) windows will pre-pend the ( control alt )
( this will create the ( control alt j ) shortcut key combination to start Jaws

b. you can use almost any key combination
c. for your case ( setting up an older version of Jaws to run )
follow the steps above, however when you get to the Jaws icon, insure you are selecting Jaws 2022
when you are in the shortcut key” edit box:
press ( shift control j )
this will assign the ( shift control j ) shortcut key combination to start Jaws 2022

to test your work:
insure you have created a shortcut key to start Jaws
unload the currently running version of Jaws ( insert f4 )
press your newly created shortcut key
(control alt j) for Jaws 2023, (shift control j) for Jaws 2022
Jaws should start in a few seconds

Hi, how are you? if you want to change versions of jaws without sighted assistance, here is what you can do.  Lets say that you have jaws 2022 loaded and you want to load jaws2023, you can first quit jaws 2022 then use control+windows+enter to bring up narrator, then tab until you here type text then type the version of jaws 2023 press enter then the other version of jaws starts.

I use the following:

`. Insert+F4 to shut down the current version of Jaws.

2. Press Windows Key+R to open the Run dialog.

3. Type jaws2023 (or whatever version) and press enter. The new version of Jaws will open after a few seconds.

I also do this if, for some reason, the current version is not working properly.

Lets say that you have jaws 2022 loaded and you want to load jaws2023, you can first quit jaws 2022 then use control+windows+enter to bring up narrator, then tab until you here type text then type the version of jaws 2023 press enter then the other version of jaws starts.

Hello.

I would use the run (windows + r) command followed by jaws+ version number as suggested by a couple of others. It's almost foolproof, unless you make a typo of course.
Sure, it's not a replacement for JAWS and won't function as well in most areas, but definitely more than sufficient for running programmes, stopping a programme that's not working, and so on.

Subject: Changing versions of JAWS without sighted assistance

For me, all I get under each title in that area is JAWS saying "link bullet, bullet, bullet".

I'm late to this discussion so this may already have been mentioned.

I have 2021, 2022 and 2023 on my system.

Each has a desktop shortcut with a beginning character not used by
anything else in the shortcuts group.
So, I shut down the running version of Jaws; hit window+m, hit the first
character of the appropriate shortcut and hit return.
Launches without a hitch.

So, no assistance is needed so long as you remember how you named the
shortcut.

And, if you prefer something simpler: creat a hotkey for each.

Either way: shutdown the running version of Jaws and start whatever
version you want at that point.

Straightforward as could be.

Mike,

I never thought to do that, and now I just did. It accomplishes another objective as well. As a Vispero tech support guy told me a long time ago, the shortcut generated on installing a new version of JAWS is unstable and often lost. I can confirm it. However, changing the name, however slightly, seems to stabilize it, which I can also confirm. So now, following your suggestion, I'll kill two birds with one stone the next time I install a new JAWS version.

If anyone is interested, I've assigned numbers to my three desktop JAWS icons. 2018 begins with 8, 2023 with 3, etc. For me, they're memorable.

I guess I’m having a dumb moment, why would one want to switch back and forth from JAWS versions? With an update, after everything is working fine, I delete the prior version of JAWS, such as when getting 023, I deleted  022.

Hi, if you want to load a prior version of jaws without sighted assistance, here is what you do.  First  unload the current version of jaws that you are using, then turn on narrator, then use the tab key until you hear type hear to search, press enter then type in the older version of jaws. press enter then you should hear the older version of jaws speaking.  i hope that this helps.

Updates break things sometimes, as we all know. JAWS doesn’t overwrite old copies of itself. One thing I guess they were good enough to realise is that someone might still need their old jaws versions for something.

An older version can be a security blanket if something should fail on the
newest.
Now, I don't recall which script Brian Hartgen was referring to, but when
I purchased Leasey, I recall reading something to the effect that some
other script package
could not be run on the same version as Leasey.
And, when I purchased Leasey at the beginning of this year, I placed it
initially on Jaws 2021
so I could become comfortable with it.

Since JAWS allows the use of multiple versions, what harm is there in
having multiple versions on a pc?
