Moderated CanJaws 2023 Speak Passwords
David Griffith
Hello Does anybody know of a setting or script that will allow Jaws 2023 to emulate the functionality of NVDA with the Speak Passwords addon. At the moment all that Jaws will announce is star at my bank login page which is stressful for a clumsy totally blind typist like myself. I risk being locked out of my accounts with clumsy mis-typings as I cannot see the keyboard to check what is being typed. For this reason I normally use NVDA for this purpose but this has stopped working on the bank login page and is unable to locate the required edit boxes. Jaws 2023 can, however, still detect the edit box but is otherwise unhelpful.

Narrator can do it. Press ALT + f8, then read the line with I think insert + up arrow.

A work around for this is to type your password in notepad and copy and paste it into your password field.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately the way the login works is to request randomly generated fields which have to be entered from pin and password sequences. That is enter character 6 of your password and so on. David Griffith .

Perhaps it's time to move to Windows Hello (with fingerprint or face recognition), a Fido 2 security key, or some other option that doesn't involve the use of passwords and which is more secure.

Thanks I did not know Narrator had this functionality. Can Narrator do this whilst Jaws is still running? Normally I would just switch to using Narrator for the bank site but there seems something non-standard about the updated web page. As I say NVDA cannot see the required edit boxes now, but thankfully Jaws can at least get into the edit boxes. I will experiment with Narrator anyway to see if it can access the login edit boxes. Thanks again for the suggestion. David Griffith

Hi David, When it is critical like that, I type it into notepad. I don’t add a space after it, nor a line under or above it, just the password. Then I can go over it character by character. If correct, I can do control a to select it all, control x to cut it and then control v to paste it into the password field. Good luck.

Thanks
My bank site does not support |Windows Hello and only supports finger print on iOS/Android apps which I want to avoid like the absolute plague for banking purposes. As soon as I install bank apps on my iPhone I am forced to start entering passcodes to access my phone for anything. Even turning on finger print recognition does not help as even after this the blasted phone still insists on me typing a passcode at least once a day for what it calls “extra security”. If I am clumsy on a keyboard I am an absolute disaster on a touch screen keyboard. Hopefully NVDA will get some kind of update which will allow it to detect the edit boxes on this website if Jaws is not up to the job in providing this support.

I’ve run into a few password fields that won’t allow pasting.

I’ve had some luck contacting the bank. Some don’t understand the problem or don’t care about a few customers. Some have made changes and contacted me to test their new procedures. Most don’t move very fast.

By accident I found this way for JAWS to read password as I typed. While JAWS was running and I am in the password field I turned on Narrator and started typing the password, JAWS announce the letters as I typed and narrator said hidden, then I turned off narrator.

This is a good idea if there is such a button. I’ve got several pages where I have to enter passwords that have eliminated the link or button that would show the password being typed.
