moderated Can no longer close menus in Edge
Adrian Spratt
Hi. This problem started in Edge just the other day. For reasons I haven't yet figured out, an Edge webpage will be taken over by the Edge menu. No matter what I do, I can't close it. I've tried the alt key, escape and even control-F4, which only succeeds in closing both the menus and the webpage.

The menu may turn up after I've done an alt-tab to go into another window, but I'm not sure. Has anyone else experienced this? Any ideas?

I am taking a wild guess, but have you tried Control + W to close it? Also, I am wondering if it is appearing because for some reason when you press alt + tab, the tab key isn't working. Just a couple of thoughts. Happy New Year! Take care and stay safe! Debby

I should have thought of that, but no, it doesn’t solve it. I just tried.

The alt keys does work with tab to move focus to another window. Also, I just tried closing the menu with the other alt key. Still no luck. Here's the current status. When I open the Edge menu, deliberately or otherwise, I can't close it. control-w, F6 and shift-F6, another press of alt, the escape key: nothing works. My only remedy is to close Edge and start over. I can't think even how to explain this. Can anyone?

Adrian,
Consider: Using SFC (System File Checker) and DISM (Deployment Imaging Servicing and Management) to Repair Windows 8 & 10 These sorts of completely atypical issues in anything shipped with Windows strongly suggests an underlying corruption, somewhere, and who knows where. Those two utilities repair same, and harm nothing, so they're a good place to start. It may or may not work, but at least you'll have more data. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 20H2, Build 19042 One does not discover new lands without consenting to lose sight of the shore for a very long time. ~ André Gide

Hi, I think what’s actually happening is that focus moves to the Edge menu control. If so, press F6 to move to the document window. Cheers, Joseph

Thank you, Brian.
May I make a suggestion for your helpful form instructions? For some reason, I couldn’t get power shell to work for me. However, Google led me to the following method that enabled me to run my system as administrator, and in turn both programs:
Windows-r CMD followed immediately by control-shift-enter.
For better or worse, neither program detected any flaws.

Adrian,
With regard to the instructions, I believe I said it doesn't matter whether PowerShell or Command Prompt was used to run the commands, but I'll double check. Given the current "state of the Windows 10 world" a number of people will have PowerShell invoked while others may have set things back to use Command Prompt. The next step I'd suggest: Doing a Windows 10 Repair Install or Feature Update Using the Windows 10 ISO file This process takes longer, but like the SFC/DISM technique, is one of those "you've got nothing to lose" deals. There had been a short period where a repair install with the 20H2 ISO was not working because you could not choose to keep both files AND apps, but I downloaded it about 1.5 weeks ago and that version has the fix applied, so any copy obtained these days will, too. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 20H2, Build 19042 One does not discover new lands without consenting to lose sight of the shore for a very long time. ~ André Gide

this may seem obvious, but may I add, using Power Shell is much more capable than Command Prompt.

Thanks, Mario. This workaround does the trick. In Edge, I need to add to your two steps an additional two presses of F6. Meanwhile, I'll keep looking for a solution.
