Moderated Best practices for configuring JAWS if not migrating settings

Van Lant, Robin

Hi all,

I finally got around to installing JAWS 2023 on my home laptop and am preparing to have my IT administrator  do it on my work laptop.  In the past, I would migrate my settings over, but some of you on this list have shared the value of starting fresh.   I decided to do this on my home laptop and am debating whether to do it for work.  Over the  years I think I have made little tweaks here and there, but, given so many customization options, it’s hard to recall anymore what is default and what are changes I have made.  I’m sure I wouldn’t recall all the  placemarkers, dictionary entries, and so on that have been added.  So, for those of you who like to start fresh, do you keep a list of the settings you know you will want to adjust or do you just wing it?   When I look at the export options tree view, should I assume that headers for Excel, MS-Edge, placemarkers and so on are changes I have made?  Maybe that is a way to trigger my memory of things.  Does it work well to, for example, export the settings that appear to be related to placemarkers, dictionary and such.  I do not think I have done any key reassignments, maybe for this exact reason of wondering how I would keep track of them.

Just looking for your recommendations.

Amen! Do the same.
The only time I wouldn't -- and that goes for any program/app -- is if
something is fundamentally wrong in how the software operates and
obviously something went amiss.
In such a situation, I'd go back to the default settings and work from
there unless I have something backed up that could straighten things out.
And, if something is that vital to my pc use, I ought to have something
saved to make my pc-life easeier.
