Moderated Any Blind DBA's out there?
Ann Byrne
My student, a DBA, has suddenly lost his vision and needs to do his job with JAWS. If there is a DBA out there using JAWS who would be willing to talk with him, please contact me and I will pass along your/his information.

What is a DBA? The only abbreviation I know is for "doing business as."

I wonder if Ann has made a typo and meant CPA which, of course, is Certified Public Accountant. A CPA these days must be able to use a PC; and becoming comfortable with JAWS would make continuing in that role almost mandatory. |

Makes sense, Mike. Still, she writes it twice, and Ann doesn't make many mistakes. If we knew for certain what she meant this time, maybe one of us would be qualified to help.

Although I can't be of any significant help here, since my DBA days were almost 30 years ago, and sighted, it would be helpful to know what database system(s) he's expected to use, and on what computer platform(s).
Since you say with JAWS, I'm presuming a PC front end, but that's still leaving a lot of unknowns. I doubt we're talking MS-Access, but if we are there's a great series of YouTube Video Tutorials on accessing MS-Access with NVDA that would be directly applicable to JAWS as well. -- Brian - Virginia, USA - Windows 10, 64-Bit, Version 22H2, Build 19045 If you cannot or will not imagine the results of your actions, there’s no way you can act morally or responsibly. Ann,
I don't know whether the individual you're seeking assistance for has started dipping his toes into groups such as this one, but if he's using JAWS and is new to it, he should be encouraged to join. This group, the JFW-Users Group, and the Windows Access with Screen Readers Group will all have information useful to him. There is also a list for blind programmers on Freelists: Program-L: Visually-Impaired Programmers Discussion List – Freelists.org Although DBAs are not strictly programmers, they're in the sphere, and there would probably be individuals there who could point him to resources appropriate to his exact situation. -- Brian - Virginia, USA - Windows 10, 64-Bit, Version 22H2, Build 19045 If you cannot or will not imagine the results of your actions, there’s no way you can act morally or responsibly. Has he lost all of his vision, or does he still have any useable vision with magnification? Pam -----Original Message-----

I don't know how much vision he has. He says it isn't enough to read the screen, though.

Not sure what DBA is, as I usually hit the delete key when it comes to these things. What I can tell you is, I use JAWS. I see the screen but my eyes get tired after about 30 seconds, so magnification is pretty much useless. Far easier to just listen to JAWS. |
