Moderated annual vs perpetual License which is better?

Daniel McGee

Hello all

Just recently got my Jaws more up to date. I'm not running the latest but I'm not far behind either. This leads onto my question.

Since I live in the UK and our Jaws distributer is: Sight and Sound. When in discussion with them, about getting my Jaws upgraded, I mentioned the annual licensing system. Apparently though, we don't have it.

My question is: those who live in the US or Canada, Do you prefer the "annual licensing system" over the older "perpetual license." If so why?

With kind regards

Daniel

Bill White

Hi, Daniel. I prefer the SMA over the annual license, even though the SMA is a little more expensive for me ($160 for two years). That works out to about $80 per year, which is actually less than the annual license. That, however is not the main reason that I prefer to remain with the SMA than to purchase the annual license. The main reason I prefer the SMA is that, if for any reason, I am unable to purchase the SMA on time, my version of JAWS remains in paid, full capability mode, rather than reverting to demo mode. If, on the other hand, one has purchased the annual license, and is unable to pay the next yearly fee on time, their version of JAWS will revert to demo mode within a month. If I discover that the newer versions of JAWS aren't adding anything of benefit to me, I like knowing that I can stay with my current version of JAWS without having to buy an SMA or an annual license, without suffering the reversion to demo mode as soon as I stop paying.

I prefer the SMA, I stay caught up with the new releases. Here in US I try to upgrade during the convention time in July and get a reduced price for the SMA. This year it was $120 for 2 years. Original Message -----

Annual is better because assuming you keep JAWS up to date, it takes at least 40 years before the annual license becomes more expensive than the perpetual license.

That being said, I have a perpetual license because when I purchased JAWS the annual license wasn't yet available.

I agree with you entirely. The SMA makes you an owner of Jaws while the
annual license effectively makes you a renter subject to eviction if you
forget or fail to renew.
Since the cost differences are nominal, I can see no reason to pass on the
SMA especially when I buy the 2-year plans.
And, if for whatever reason JAWS disappeared from the screen reader scene,
with the SMA, I still would have working screen reader software.

Gene Warner

Actually, I agree too. The perpetual license is better. In my previous message where I said that annual is better, I was looking only at cost. Not everyone can afford that initial $1,100 outlay. (Purchase+SMA)

A couple of factors come into play when it comes to the perpetual license
(forgetting the initial outlay). l
First is one's age. As an example, I'll be 70 in Jan. Thus, a perpetual
license would likely make little sense as I stand a great chance of not
living that long.
Secondly, purchasing the software for $1,100 is making a bet that JAWS
will be around for the next couple of decades.

Note that originally, the big upfront outlay was the only available option
for getting into JAWS with upgrades requiring the SMA.
I was one of the lucky ones, so to speak, as I ended up with JAWS when
Window-Eyes hit the big bucket being taken over by the developers of JAWS.
We were given, as part of the take over, free JAWS plus a couple of SMA
years so we were very fortunate in that regard.
It was a struggle adjusting to JAWS as, in many ways, I was far more
comfortable with Window-Eyes as I had been using it from its early days.
And, Window-Eyes in many ways is still usable in Win10 though, of course,
JFW is more solid given that it remains umder continual development and
fine turing.

This whole question of what is best as far as paying for JAWS is not one
of one right answer but what one feels most comfortable with and works for
them.
And most folks have valid reasons lfor their decision given their
individual situations.

Gene Warner

I don't remember how it worked when I bought JAWS. I am assuming in my calculations about cost that JAWS doesn't come with any upgrades (SMAs) or if you need to start paying for SMAs if you want even the first upgrade after buying the software.

If you do get a couple of upgrades, or even just one, the break even point between the two licensing methods would be a year or two farther away.

You are the second person I've run across that got caught up in the Window Eyes buy out. The other person said that he would continue to use Window Eyes until it no longer worked. At the time both of us were still running Windows 7.

Also, the SMA is better if you want use older versions of windows.
But if FS wasn't around to renew the three counts, would it still work?

Didn't think about that less then trivial issue of renewing the count.
That, indeed, would become an issue; you're right on target.

This answer has to depend somewhat on whether or not you already purchased the full perpetual version, as I did twenty years ago. For me the SMA is the one and only choice which makes sense. On the other hand, if you are only now starting with Jaws, I would think it best to go with the annual plan for financial reason.
But if you can afford the initial purchase price and are going to be using it for many years to come, it might still be the best option since, if you can't keep up the SMA you can continue to use whatever version you have until it no longer works with the latest OS.
And there is always the personal preference.

On main menu this week, Mr. Jones VP of FS said they were working on a less expensive way to get caught up if your were behind on your SMA. He also said that now you can purchase a one year add on to the SMA.

For me, it is cheaper to get the SMA at $165 for 2 years as apposed to $90 USA funds per year.

Gene Warner

You mean the price of SMAs went up again? It used to be $120 for two years, then it went up to $150 a couple of years or so ago, now it's $165? If they keep that up SMAs will become more expensive than the annual license. It's only $15 different now, $165 versus $180.

Let me add that when you and I bought our screen readers originally, there
was no other choice but to pay the full price.
You wanted a screen reader and an employer or rehab agency wasn't going to
pay the bil for you, we paid it.
These new annual purchasing approaches are a relatively new concept.
So, if someone out there wondered why we paid $900-1100, hope that this
posting explains it -- that was the only way to get a screen reader.

Nancy, I feel the same way. My mother gave me various gifts, special things to enhance my life, such as a small, sheepskin foot rug which I have beside my bed. Whenever I use such things, I think of it as my mother still caring for me, years after she died.

Blessings,

why can't you use a VPN or virtual private network if you're outside of the United States, and then trick your computer into thinking you actually are in the United States using the VPN, and then maybe you could purchase jaws while your computer is running through the VPN even though you were outside of the United States? By that I mean, you could still purchase the jaws and your license. Although I don't know if this would work. just a thought.
