Moderated Alternative word processors to Microsoft Word?
Hi all
Are there any stand alone word processors that are accessible and work with Jaws?
I have read somewhere that Microsoft are going to be discontinuing the stand alone purchase of Office after V2021 of the product and go fully subscription bass.
I have office 2019. WIN10 22.h2

There's Libre Office, it's free.
I think it's libreoffice.org.

I guess Google Docs is great for colaboration work though.

Libreoffice works pretty well for the basic stuff I've tried with it. For complex documents, I think you might want to spend for Microsoft no matter what it costs, especially if you are working with others using MS office; translations back and forth between formats is always an iffy proposition.

This is likely true. That being said:
1. Office 2019 has extended support through 2025.
2. With the exception of Outlook, which is in constant contact with cyberspace as part of what it does, you could continue using Word 2019 indefinitely if it meets your needs.
3. If you can manage to get together with a few friends (up to 5 in addition to your self) for a family subscription to M365, the cost per year is less than $20, and it takes quite a few years of $20 to get anywhere near to the up-front cost of earlier versions of Office.
4. LibreOffice or Google Docs are both very good choices. Which is better depends on personal preference. LibreOffice hosts its own Libre Office Accessibility Discussion List

I'm surprised nobody has so far suggested the free Jarte word processor program, which works well with JAWS and is very popular with blind computer users:

I would also go for Libre. The Word Processor works well, but not so sure about some of the other stuff, like the spreadsheet programme, Calc I believe it's called. But, you did ask for a word processor specifically,a nd Libre is distributed without cost, so you've got nothing to lose really, especially if you, like me, don't necessarily want to do your work online with google or something. I am an Android users and spend a good amount of time on youtube, so obviously I'm not totally anti-google or whatever, but putting your documents and such in their trust seems a bridge too far, especially after hearing certain stories... I guess Google Docs is great for colaboration work though. -----Original Message----- From: main@jfw.groups.io <main@jfw.groups.io> On Behalf Of Chris Hill Sent: December 27, 2022 6:46 AM To: main@jfw.groups.io Subject: Re: Alternative word processors to Microsoft Word? Jarte word processor program-
From their website: Support is no longer provided for Jarte. No further development of the Jarte program is expected.
Jarte Plus is still downloadable (at no cost) and, from what I've been told, remains functional. But using out-of-support and unpatched software means, eventually, it's gonna break and you'll be stuck looking for something else when it does.

Because Jarte is based largely on Wordpad, I will probably continue to workeven if it is no longer supported as long as Wordpad continues to work. I have not heard anywhere that MS intends to end support for Wordpad. Speaking of which, there is also HJ Pad, the free word processor that comes bundled with JAWS, which is also based on Wordpad, and is perfectly adequate for many users.

found that Excel will mess up the spreadsheet by shifting delimiters like
commas, and you will have empty cells and some cells with two delimiters.
Libre calc does not do that.

That was a Freudian pharmaceutical slip.

That's good to know. I have al ittle experience with excel but never really
played with calc, and some people were complaining that there were some
accessibility quirks or something, but I don't really remember.
