Moderated Accessible Web Design Tools that work with JAWS and/or NVDA

Diana Brent

Last week, I sent a message to this list asking if the Wix Web design program was or could be made accessible using JAWS or NVDA to work for editing web pages it creates. So far, I have gotten crickets from this list which does not bode well, so now I am asking what web design tools do visually impaired individuals using screen readers use to design/edit websites and their pages. Any info is most appreciated, thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

Hi Diana,

Wordpress is certainly accessible.

Cheers,

Hi, I couldn’t tell you anything about Wix beyond what  you already probably know. A friend of mine also tried it out with no luck. As far as I can tell, tools for web designing and website builders  are not screen reader friendly, but this is just my outlook. However, it is base on the fact that web 4.0  is concerned with sensory design; therefore, visual and dynamic objects within a web  are quite essential.  From what I’ve heard an what I’ve red, there are wonderful tools for people who don’t know  anything about web programming, but precisely for this reason, the interface of those pieces of software is designed  to make things easier for the user from a visual perspective. Depending on what you want to do, and the purpose behind it, there is probably no other option but learning HTML coding. This is what blind people do, and it is easy to notice because in their websites, text and static  objects are predominant.

Best,

Leo Bado

Hi, do you have to know html to work with this or you just select  pre-designed objects to include in your pages? Also, do you have to install anything int the web server via FTP?

Hi Diana,

I also use Wordpress. It's a little bit of a learning curve but doable and gets much easier as you continue to practice with it.

Let me know if you need any other information or help.

Hi Dianna,

Sometimes, the best way to know if something is accessible or not is just to try it, to see if it meets your needs. Try using wicks for what you need it for. Maybe you can get it to work, and let us know. an example of where trying something out applies is: I couldn’t find any information documented online on how accessible MyMercy is for viewing my medical records. I just had to try it, and it worked for me.

Best regards,
Mike

Hey.

Nothing to do with Office or Microsoft. It’s a platform for blogging and other web templates I think. You can go to wordpress.com and sign up, and I’m guessing all or most of the tools are web-based, though maybe there is an editor of some sort to download as well. People have been talking about it on this thread and elsewhere.

Hello dear, OK so I think that we can post in wordpress.com only using Microsoft Word.  If you try to do something in just this free version of wordpress.com, the Guttemberg editor is activated and you cannot change it for the classic editor which is more accessible with screen readers.  And also, when you post from Word to wordpress.com, your posts are not exactly like you do them inside Word;  for editing as well as you want, you should login to wordpress.com and use fucking Guttemberg... I believe that is a trash since Guttemberg!

Conclusion: we can use Wordpress very very easy but with classic edditor and classic widgets tool.  The power of Wordpress is wonderful and whichever can make whatever kind of websites like portals, forums, stores and much much more.  So you need to own your hosting and install Wordpress there.  Infact, if you know about html5 and css languages you can manage the accessibility of this sites.

Hi Mike,

I think I can save Diana some time. Wix really is not accessible, and they don’t seem to have any interest in making it so, last I contacted them.

I know this, because I host websites for small businesses.

Hi,

WordPress is a Content Management System, as is Wix.

The company who own WordPress, Autommatic, are definitely making it more and more accessible.

You can find out more at http://www.wordpress.org for a self-hosted website, or http://www.wordpress.com, if you want Wordpress to host your site.

All the best

Hi,

It used to be a blogging site, but it is much more now.

For example, I run my entire shop on it, at https://www.comproom.co.uk using WooCommerce to power the shop.
