Moderated Accessible spyware remover?

Lindsay Cowell

Hi

I use windows 11, can anyone recommend a spyware remover as windows security let an unsafe tracking cookie through, and now I’m getting scam notifications?

Hey.

I would try Malwarebytes. Saved my butt on three or four occasions.

You can turn notifications off in your web browser; that may make your life easier till you clean things out.

I don’t know how mucht eh paid malwarebytes costs, but you can download it and it will work as a trial for a certain number of days, and then the realtime protection will be disabled, so you can just use it to scan your system when you need to, on demand…which is fine since you already have Windows Defender running in background.

Just interested, I am still using Malwarebytes 1.75 as later versions became far more difficult/inaccessible for screen reader users. Has this now been rectified in the latest  version?

I had a hard time figuring out what version I was using, but, it looks like 4.0.0, and while the interface is a little weird, I don’t really feel it’s worse than what was there before. In some ways, it might even be better. You do have to tab tab tab around a lot though, which I’m not a great fan of, but wahtever, for me the important thing is that it can get the job done.

It has been rectified. The newest versions of MalwareBytes are very accessible. The tab key is definitely your friend.

For one user the cost of MalwareBytes Premium is $45.00, at least for the first year.

That's good news on Malwarebyte's usability. I know you have tracked this
for a number of years reporting on the issues you've experienced.

As for what one thread respondent thought was expensive, at $100 annually
for 5 devices, I would call that reasonable. The real question with
be does it provide enough additional protection over and above a internet
security package such as Eset Smart Security warranting the expense?

David Goldfield <david.goldfield@...>

Sherri, the free version should provide a brief trial period where you can use all of the program’s features, which I believe lasts for 2 weeks. After that it reverts to just being an on demand scanner. This means that you can scan your system for malware but you can’t use it to constantly monitor your system in real time. I also don’t know if the free version limits the type of scanning that can be done as I’ve been a premium user for several years.

The free version definitely serves a good purpose. They pretty loudly have things all over the interface tryign to get you to buy, but you can just tab right on by them. In my opinion the on demand scanning makes it worth having. I don’t know about other limitations – I doubt there are any on detection itself.

I wouldn't run both. I would run one or the other. These sorts of programmes
tend to interfere with one another's operations.
The malwarebytes folks seem to know what they're about. I've seen their blog
as well and the analysis they do is pretty thorough and detailed and helpful
if you have a particular sort of malware thing you're trying to deal with.

Well, Eset Smart Security seems to be doing a decent job; so probably, at
this point, if it ain't broken, don't try to fix it.
As you say, multiple checking software can bring up conflicts.

The best thing about MalwareBytes is you really don't have to remove anything, you are protected from it before it's a problem. I get a monthly report telling me how many things I've been protected from.

I wish Norton was even a little accessible.
