Moderated Accessible Ebook Readers
Robbie Curtis
Hey Everyone,
Recently I downloaded a book sample from Amazon but kept getting an error of "Secure Storage" which does not allow the sample to become readable. Do any of you know of an Ebook reader that is accessible and that supports the Kindle format? I am using Windows 11 and JAWS 2022. Thanks in advance. |

Robbie,
You can download Kindle for PC from Amazon. It’s a free app that will read most Kindle books with JAWS and NVDA, including braille displays. You will need to check that the book has Screen Reader Support—which is found in the Product Details.

As far as I know, Kindle is a proprietary format exclusive to Amazon, which is why I won't use it, so you'll have to download the Kindle app for whichever operating system you are using.

Hi Paul,
I already downloaded Kindle For PC but the problem I'm experiencing is that when I download a free sample of the book and open it, Jaws doesn't see it and I've checked to see if screen reader support is there before I download.
I go to the help menu and hit the Check for Problems and the message says that some of the items were unable to download and one of the issues was secure storage. It gives me the steps to try and correct the problem but I'm not seeing the instructions with my braiile display and there's no way to copy just using JAWS commands.
This is the reason for me asking if there's any other ebook
readers that are accessible and can support Kindle formats. Thanks.

Hi David,
Yes and I have uninstalled and reinstalled the app many times but still get the same problem of not seeing the text for the book when I open it.

I'm not sure what you mean but the book is screen reader supported and Text-To-Speech enabled. However, I do not like using the text to speech feature with the app.

If its actually kindle, you may have better luck if you have a smart
phone. If its something else, that is another problem. On Sat, 24 Sep 2022 12:35:59 -0400, Robbie Curtis wrote: -- Your life is like a penny. You're going to lose it. The question is: How do you spend it? John Covici wb2una covici@... |

Hello Robbie,
I’ve not experienced the issue you describe, so I can’t help with that.
You can only read Kindle books on readers from Amazon. Have you tried the Kindle app on your phone?

Ok. I'm curious, what is the book your wanting to read a sample too? If it can't be read, perhaps it can be converted with codex. It's a long shot but who knows. I'd like to see though. You may have to report it to amazon.

I'm running 1.38 and there are a few numbers after that. It usually will update it's self. Are you running the regular app or the older ap with the plugin. The regular app is the one that works with NVDA and Jaws.

It does work although in most cases, it's no longer needed. It's what I used when I was using the kindle app with the accessibility plugin do to the fact that I didn't like the voice that came with the kindle app. The newer format also won't allow you to convert using codex although there are some books that are in the older format. Then it comes in handy. I was thinking there might be a chance that it might be able to work on the sample mentioned in the previous posts. If nothing works, then it would be best to use a phone or tablet to read the book.

When I go to check for problems within the help menu it states that I have a "secure storage" error. It tells me the steps in correcting the problem but it does not show up on my braille display so that I can follow along. I can't seem to find these directions online in the help page. Looks like I'm going to have to use another screen reader or go to the Kindle for ICloud. Thanks. On 9/26/2022 9:36 AM, david Jennette wrote:
