a Keyboard Problem.
Hi,

I am not sure if this might be a jaws problem or not. I have a MS Surface Ergonomic slpit keyboard that is wireless. It had been working fine then I could not get any response when I’d type on it. I have changed the batteries and even brought it back to the shop where I bought it. They confirmed it is working fine.

They said just bring it home, unpair it and the pair it again with my Windows 11 HP computer. The computer will not allow the unpairing of the keyboard. I am wondering if I might have accidentally set some type of Jaws setting that is preventing the clicking of the mouse or typing on the keyboard. Is it possible?
Any one have thoughts on what I might check settings wise to see if I can unpair and then pair again?
Or if there is a Jaws setting/command I might have set and somehow locked the keyboard?

Thanks.

Eileen

Hi, Eileen. Have you considered calling the Microsoft Disability desk to have them remote into your computer to check your bluetooth settings? Their telephone number is, 800-936-5900. They may be able to,
1. See if your keyboard is still paired with your computer, and,
2. either unpair and pair it again, or just pair it again, if it is not now paired.

Please let us know what you ultimately find out.

Hi Bill,

Oh yes, I did call the MS disability support line. They could not figure it out and escalated the issue to a tear 2 support of which I will not hear back from until Friday. I need my brother-in-law to be hear since he can see and use the mouse while the keyboard is messed up.

Another issue I have just realized by buying a USB wired split keyboard from Amazon that just arrived and I plugged it in. I'm typing on it now, but the functions are acting very funky and not performing tasks as I would expect. For example I cannot get alt-f4 to work for closing out windows or open programs. Its almost as though there was a lock of some type like a function key. On the hard-wired keyboard there is not a function key, but on my wireless one there is. I can't help but wonder if I pressed some combo of keys that has me in an unknown mode.

Thanks again for any input or pointer to what else I might check on.

Eileen

Hi Eileen,
This might be a strange idea, but have you tried going to the manufacturers website and looking for the manual and seeing if there is something in there about this issue?

Hello
Eileen,

Your wireless keyboard is a gaming keyboard and it maps the function keys to be audio controls rather than working like function keys.  On many of these you can press the fn and shift key and it will lock the function keys so they can be used as function keys.  If this does not work then you need to hit the fn key in combination with the function key to get it to function properly.

Eileen Scrivani

Hello,

Your suggestion has helped me some what. I spoke with Jaws tech support this afternoon and was told that my computer an HP has something in its BIOS that sets the function keys to multimedia keys along with my numeric keypad. In doing as you suggest by pressing the Fn key with say alt-f4 I am at least now able to close out programs properly and get my shutdown menu from the desktop rather than just hitting the power on/off button.

My problem with the keyboard(s) is compounded because I’ve had the computer and original MS Surface Ergonomic split keyboard for about 9 months now and it had been working perfectly, including my function keys and the numeric keypad. Two days ago the MS Surface wireless stopped working and I could not get any response when I tried typing on it. I changed the batteries hoping that would fix the issue, but it did not. I then pulled out of storage the original HP standard wireless keyboard that came with the computer and while I am able to type on it, the HP  keyboard has the problem with the function keys and numeric keypad going on. Besides I find the keys all over the HP standard keyboard are so crammed together it is very difficult for me to type accurately on it.

Then there is keyboard number 3 that I ordered from Amazon and it is a USB connected keyboard that is also a split ergonomic style. The Amazon keyboard which I think was called a “newlea” has the same problems with the function keys and numeric keypad going on. The problem right now is that the keyboard layout on the newlea is a tad different and I am not finding a Fn key to try doing it with the function keys or even Fn+shift. I suppose the Newlea will need to be sent back as well and I hope Best Buy will be able to correct this issue for me since I am sure it will need more advanced tech assistance to go in and try altering the BIOS if they can.

Thanks for the Fn pointer it has helped.

Eileen

Hello
