Substitute punctuation marks with sounds

Tony Malykh

Hello all,

Is there a way to substitute punctuation marks with custom sounds? I am a developer and often times I have to listen to tongue twisters of punctuation marks, like "left bracket right brace left paren ..." I wish to replace all these parens and brackets with sounds. Is there a way to do so in Jaws?

Thanks

Tony

Hi Tony,

One thing that comes to mind is to use the dictionary manager.  I know it can be done, but I just can't give exact steps.
Take care.  Mike.  Sent from my iBarstool.

yes it can. you just specify which wav sound you want instead of typing
a replacement text. if you want the pause that a period provides, you'd
put a period in the replacement but the period won't be spoken.

I just took a look at this. Quite interesting. You hit add, then tab over to the list of sounds.

I'm curious, where do those sound files reside?

Are they part of the Windows sounds, or unique to Jaws?

Thanks,
Richard

I looked too, but am not sure when the sounds would apply, for example piano.

Richard, the sounds may be unique to JAWS because most, if not all, come
from the VFO employees and are probably used in particular features of
JAWS). but they're plain old wav files (nothing special).

Right, but if one wanted to use a custom sound, it would be necessary to know where the folder is, unless there isn't one and they are simple part of the program.

as long as the paragraph break produces a character that JAWS can
detect, which I'm assuming is the same as a paragraph symbol (pilcro)?

locate the character for which you want a sound for, press insert+d to
launch the pronounciation dictionary manager, press spacebar to activate
the add button, tab to and spacebar on the browse buttonn. the default
folder is set to, as far as I know, to only

C:\Users\<name>\AppData\Roaming\Freedom
Scientific\JAWS\16.0\Settings\enu\Sounds\

so, you can either copy the wav files you want to use to the above
sounds folder or import them into the sounds folder from within the
browse dialog, from which you can choose a wav file. as far as I can
see, there isn't a way to navigate to a different folder than the sounds
folder. if you know how, do post back to explain how.

the rest of the steps are self explanatory.

Hi Mario,
I only have Jaws 2018 and thanks to your info, I found them in:
"C:\ProgramData\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\2018\SETTINGS\enu\SOUNDS"

I don't know that I'll ever do anything with this, but it is fun to know about. Someone at Freedom Scientific must have been a Victor Borge fan.

For those who do not know that name, he was an excellent pianist, but also a very funny comedian who had a great routine about phonetic punctuation.

You can check it out on YouTube:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7BXPKyikB0

Thanks,
Richard

Thank you for your reply. I tried dictionary manager, and I can set a custom sound for punctuation marks, but when I try it out, the sounds are very unreliable. I can hear my sound being played only in 50% of the times. Moreover, if the punctuation is in the middle of the sentence, Jaws doesn't pause the speech and there is no particular order in which the sound is played.

Hi Mario,

I couldn't find the sounds using the file path you posted, but instead found them here:

C:\ProgramData\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\16.0\SETTINGS\enu\SOUNDS

This is where the sounds for all Jaws versions are saved / stored.
The Sounds folder in your path was empty, & even after unhiding all files / folders it was still empty.

I know. I've worked in JAWS 16 with the speech and sound schemes manager, but I found it painstaking, and it didn't seem to work right away. I made many adjustments in Word to indicate different attributes to speed up proofreading, but it took considerable tweaking and redoing.

I have not found the sounds directories under settings\enu to contain any files. I've tried versions 16, 17, 18, and 2018. Nada.

Hello all,

Is there a way to substitute punctuation marks with custom sounds? I am
a developer and often times I have to listen to tongue twisters of
punctuation marks, like "left bracket right brace left paren ..." I wish
to replace all these parens and brackets with sounds. Is there a way to
do so in Jaws?

Thanks

Tony

On my system, they are not under the Users folder, but on the root c drive under Program data, etc.

Nada.

Hi Tony,

Damn, don't that just suck! Out of curiosity, did you use an application specific dictionary manager, or the default JDF dictionary manager?

Thank you for your reply. I tried dictionary manager, and I can set a custom sound for punctuation marks, but when I try it out, the sounds are very unreliable. I can hear my sound being played only in 50% of the times. Moreover, if the punctuation is in the middle of the sentence, Jaws doesn't pause the speech and there is no particular order in which the sound is played.

Hi Gudrun,

Use the file path below to get to the sounds:

I initially looked in the shared folder but didn't find any sounds
folder. that's why I posted the path in the user folder. but now I
looked again following the path you provided, and now see the sounds
folder. I wonder why I didn't see it before? oh well...

Hi Mario,

I couldn't find the sounds using the file path you posted, but instead found
them here:

C:\ProgramData\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\16.0\SETTINGS\enu\SOUNDS

This is where the sounds for all Jaws versions are saved / stored.
The Sounds folder in your path was empty, & even after unhiding all files /
folders it was still empty.
Take care. Mike. Sent from my iBarstool.

Right, but if one wanted to use a custom sound, it would be necessary to
know where the folder is, unless there isn't one and they are simple
part of the program.

Thanks,
Richard

Richard, the sounds may be unique to JAWS because most, if not all, come
from the VFO employees and are probably used in particular features of
JAWS). but they're plain old wav files (nothing special).

I just took a look at this. Quite interesting. You hit add, then tab
over to the list of sounds.

I'm curious, where do those sound files reside?

Are they part of the Windows sounds, or unique to Jaws?

Thanks,
Richard

Hello Tony,
Dictionary Manager may suit your needs.
Place cursor on the offending punctuation mark.
Press insert D
Follow the instructions, and press alt F4 to implement the changes.
Cheers
