Moderated Migrating Jaws Settings From One Computer To Another

Tom Behler

Hello, everyone.

I know I should know this, especially since I think I did it once, but can someone tell me if there’s a way to migrate Jaws settings from one computer to another?

I just picked up a small new Lenovo laptop, and will do a fresh Jaws install on it.

I’d like to migrate my Jaws settings from my main computer onto the new laptop if possible.

One minor complication is that ,my main computer runs on  Windows 10, while the new Lenovo runs Windows 11.

Any thoughts on how to do this would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Tom Behler

In the JAWS Utility menu, there is an import/export menu.  Just follow the steps.

Mike:

I’m not sure we are clear here.

I want to migrate Jaws settings from an older Windows 10 computer to a new Windows 11 Lenovo laptop that I just purchased.

The new computer does not currently have Jaws on it, so it will need to be a fresh install.

Then, I want to migrate my original Jaws settings from my old computer onto the new computer with the new fresh Jaws install.

I hope this is clearer.

It seems to me that Mike's instructions have you covered, Tom. If your new computer running Windows 11 is running the same version of JAWS that you're running on your Windows 10 computer, I would think you would export your Windows 10 Jaws configuration settings using Mike's instructions and import them on the Windows 11 computer. I assume these settings are housed in some sort of file you can save to a flash drive or to the cloud from where you can import them with the new computer.

Good luck.

Ok, Alan.

Not trying to be difficult here;  just trying to be sure I understand.

Will install the same version of Jaws on the new computer, and go from there.

In both cases, I’m using the latest version of Jaws 2023.

Thanks to you and everyone for your patience.

Hi Tom,

On your current computer you will export the Jaws settings and they will be saved by default to the desktop.

Copy this Jaws settings file to a flashdrive or an account like OneDrive  or Dropbox and import this settings file into the fresh Jaws install of the new computer.

Here's another tip I do when I install Jaws on a new computer.  Let's use J2023 as the example.  I'll copy the J2023 ENU folder to a flashdrive... just like the settings file.
I'll then paste the ENU folder in its appropriate place replacing the default J2023 ENU folder.  This will also transfer settings, default dictionary, and scripts and other things that don't transfer with the settings file.

Take care.  Mike.  Sent from my iBarstool.

Mike and all:

Thanks for the tips on how to migrate Jaws settings from one computer to another.

I finally managed to get my Jaws settings migrated to my new laptop, so I’m now all set.

Navigating the import-export menus got a bit tricky at times, but I think it might have been because I was getting used to the laptop keyboard and also because I hadn’t initially put Jaws in the laptop configuration.

But, with a little bit of sighted assistance, I got it done.

Things are now working quite well on the new laptop, especially since I got Jaws into the laptop configuration.

Thanks again!
