Mike,

I know you know this, but I’ll point out that you can use a program’s properties to run its window as maximized. Go to the desktop icon for Barbara’s email program, alt-enter for properties, tab to the window option.

What I don’t know is whether maximizing the program’s window will also maximize individual email messages.

Hi Roger,

Maybe you can help with my wife's email problem.  It's pretty much the same but, every time she opens an email she has to maximize it for it to read correctly.  Isn't there a setting somewhere in Windows 10 that is supposed to remember repeated maximizing of the same type of window?

Or, is there a setting that I can change that will maximize whatever window that comes into focus / view?  She's running the latest of Windows 10 Home and Office 2021 Pro.  All help is greatly appreciated.

Take care.  Mike.  Sent from my iBarstool.

Hi Brian,

Yes, Lenovo Vantage is installed and used.  The biggest problem is that this computer is only used when we go to our other house so, it has long idol times.  I break it out for updating and these sort of things but, unless I'm told about these little things right away I don't get right on them.  And, being this is basically a travel computer, I'm sure she has more important things on her mind and just forgot to mention it.  Hell, maybe she did tell me and I blew it off!  Other than this little hiccup it's agreat computer.

Does she have any recollection as to whether there was any update, to anything, around the time of the appearance of the issue?

Here are things you can try:
1.  Using DISM (Deployment Imaging Servicing and Management) and SFC (System File Checker) to Repair Windows 8, 10 & 11 (Both are fairly quick, and both are zero risk.  This eliminates nearly all Windows issues from the equation.)

2. A repair install of Office 2019.  If you want to go for longer, but more thorough, use the repair that accesses the cloud rather than just the one that's part of Office and entirely "on the machine."  If you're pressed for time, use the local "on the machine" first, then if that doesn't work, the cloud-based repair.

3. I seem to recall JAWS having a repair install.  But, personally, I prefer an unistall and reinstall rather than repairing.

I don't recall hearing about any issue like this that's specific to Lenovo hardware, and you'd probably hear a lot more about something like this on this and other screen-reader specific groups if it were even kinda-sorta widespread.

Also, if you do not have Lenovo Vantage (their "automatic service station" software) downloaded and installed on that laptop, do it.  So many weird things can occur because of out-of-date drivers and similar.  Vantage is well-regarded in the technician community and makes keeping all the Lenovo specific software and drivers on their hardware up-to-date.

The problem is that this issue sounds like it has nothing to do with Outlook 2021's main window, which you can force to open maximized, but with the reading window.

If there's a way to force the message reading window to open maximized I'm unaware of it and have never had to do that to get JAWS or NVDA to read an e-mail message correctly.

If any updates to Windows, Office, or JAWS occurred immediately prior to this starting, it might be worth using System Restore to go back to a restore point prior to that time and see if that fixes the issue.  It's not like it's frequent, but I've been in the PC support business for so long that there have been way more instances than I can count of updates somehow "applying wrong" the first time around, but not in such a way that things fully crash and burn.  Usually the second try works, for whatever reason.  There have been a few (less than one hand) instances where a third try was required.

Ok, maximizing the window did not help.  The only way I read this message was to forward it.

Thanks!

No.  I didn’t think of that.  I will give it a try.  Just thought it odd that this is a random behavior.

Thanks!

Have you tried Maxmizing the screen by pressing ALT + SPACE followed by X?

I have Jaws 2021 and Outlook 2019.  Sometimes I can open a message and all Jaws will say is, “document and then give a number.”  This doesn’t happen with all emails.  It is the strangest thing!  I have turned Jaws off and back on again with no change.  I have updates turned off to Jaws.  I have no clue what changed.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

I get this same verbalization from time to time, but it goes away immediately and I can read the message. I’m not sure this is a case for maximization.

Try maximizing the window with alt+space then x or alt+dash then x. That may help.
