Moderated Amazon Smile

Van Lant, Robin

I don’t recall ever seeing the prompt either. I honestly forget about it most times. When I do remember it, I’ll often load up my cart in the regular site and/or via my phone app, then go to the URL Smile.amazon.com which has my charity registered, and get to my cart from there to complete the purchase.

Well my wife has the prime account, and I get free prime shipping, since I live in the same home, but I have never gotten that prompt.

But I've searched for it on Amazon without finding it.

Is it /smile on the URL or something?

smile.amazon.com is the direct URL to Amazon Smile, and you need to "cross register" (for lack of a better way of putting it) your existing Amazon account the first time you use it.

I've been using https://smile.amazon.com/ for years now, and the number of charities they have in their list is astounding.  Small local charities here in the Shenandoah Valley are ones that can be donated to, and I'm sure that's true for virtually any other place's local charities.

The smile version of Amazon is exactly parallel to regular Amazon and can be used if you're an Amazon Prime member.  In fact, if you search on regular amazon.com you'll often be prompted as to whether you want to go to the same page in Amazon Smile so if you purchase you will be making that tiny donation.  But every little bit helps.

Ditto to Brian's comments on discovering Amazon Smile:

My sighted wife heard about from someone and we had to figure out how to
initially sign up.
So, at least in the past, it was word of mouth or through some 3rd party
mention that one became aware of it.
Amazon didn't hit you in the face every time you were on a page
encouraging one to use it.

Larry Gassman

You have to be enrolled in Amazon Smile to use it.

You should be able to do a search for it.

It is a way for a portion of your purchases in dollars you spend, to benefit charities you choose.

I use it all of the time for my church.

I am not clear on what the "it" is, but I'm presuming you mean some indicator that Amazon Smile exists on the regular Amazon page.  I have never seen such, and I just checked in an incognito window (so there was no chance of something showing up because I was recognized as an existing member) and no such indicator is there.

I read about Amazon Smile somewhere, maybe the New York Times, and sought it out via URL afterward.

Even Amazon's own documentation makes no mention of getting to Amazon Smile other than directly when you're using a PC and web browser:

Well then no more Echo ordering I guess.
No smiles there.

I doubt having it set to your account is enough.
Anytime I want Smile applied I have to physically log into it.
If I place an order on the pc on the regular Amazon side, it doesn't get
credited.

Does anyone know,
If you use your Amazon Alexa device to re-order something, does it use Smile if you have the Smile Amazon set to your account?
I get refills of some supplements and I like to just tell my echo to order this or that, and it finds the last instance of that item and I can just tell it to order it, but I will not do that if it does not use the Smile that I just set to my account.
Thanks.

Well, let's hope that this discussion will get others to take advantage of
smile be it for their church, favorite charity, a social club, and
probably some of the blindness organizations, their chapters and
affiliates, and even some of the non-profits that serve the blind
community on a regular basis.

K0LNY

Another way to look at it is,
You can donate a dollar for every 200 dollars you spend.
I spend a lot at Amazon.com, mainly because of the free shipping.
I spent almost a hundred just the other day, too bad I hadn't checked here
first.

$1,800 = $9 in donations <smile>!!

Well I should have written, with a screenreader.
Of course, since you are already a smile member, you can't test it on your computer or any computer you have used to log into Amazon with.
But I have tried and tried several times for over a year to find it on the page, and it was never there.
I even went into my Amazon account and looked for it there.
But for the sighted, according to the sighted folk in the local club, you simply click on the Amazon smile on the page.
Well friends, it just never happened for me, it wasn't until I got that link that it worked.

That would be incorrect.  I am not an Amazon Prime member, and neither was my partner until relatively recently.  We both used smile.amazon.com for several years as regular Amazon account holders.

give the ham club treasurer a $10 bill and tell him to keep the extra $1
in the treasury <smile>!!
That shows how little actually ends up in the hands of the recipients.

Believe me, I use the Jaws search multiple times daily, and I even use it in
places other than web pages.
For over a year, I tried to find smile on amazon.com, and never found it.
Although I get free shipping, because I have the same address as my wife,
Amazon.com has never availed Smile to me, and it has never been on a page.
It wasn't until Brian gave the link, was I able to get it associated with my
account.

My guess is that one needs to be a prime member to avail themselves of the
Smile program.
Multiple people may use a prime account so you and your wife should be
using the same account.
And our adult son also uses the account having stuff shipped to his home
directly.

When getting into Smile as Brian and I have suggested, using the search
function of JAWS will find the word smile.
And when you place the order, the confirmation page will do also and
indicating which charity is your benefactor.

Another point to be remembered is that the key to getting the donation
credited is to make certain that when you are in check-out, you are in
Smile.
Doing as Brian and I suggested will always give you the word smile to be
found if you use Jaws' search for text function.
Items needn't be placed while in Smile; only when you proceed to check-out
matters.

And any non-profit ought to take advantage of the program.

K0LNY

About a year ago, I spent about 1,800 dollars on Amazon for a backup
generator, but I couldn't find smile anywhere any way on the page, and it
had never been offered on my pages, so that was a big loss to the club, that
has always bugged me.

I use Smile all the time.

I open my browser that I use for Amazon shopping -- Chrome.

Then, in the edit box I type

smile.amazon.com

and I have it for shopping, checking the shooping cart, proceed to
check-out from there.
You have to have designated which charity/non-profit/club you wish as your
default donation receiver. My wife and I use our local Rescue Mission as
the receiver of the 0.5% share that gets donated.
That works out to 50 cents per $100 spent; so your ham club isn't likely
to be rolling in dough for any individual shopper; but it can add up.
Amazon doles out the money quarterly, if I recall correctly.

Where you designate the charity, I'm not certain as ours has been set up
for years without change.
Hopefully, someone can address that question as, I believe, each donation
receiver applies for a code.
