Moderated Backup recommendations for SSD system with problem SSD
Gene...
Many thanks, Brian. I’m downloading Crystal Disk Info as I type this and will hopefully get some helpful diagnostic info from it. I got a fairly detailed report from the trial version of Casper Backup version 11 when attempting another failed backup this morning. I must say that when I get my system operating at 100% again where backups are concerned that Casper seems to be outstanding and well worth the $60 cost.

Alan,
chkdsk in Windows is aimed more at checking the integrity of file systems on a drive rather than the state of the drive itself. Even drives that are developing bad sectors (old HDDs) will reallocate them and still often come out just fine with chkdsk.
The utility I mentioned is called CrystalDiskInfo <https://crystalmark.info/en/software/crystaldiskinfo/>. It is also available via the Microsoft Store as well.
If the maker of your SSD has its own utility for disk status and health, that will often dig a bit deeper than third-party tools can because it has specific knowledge of the specific drive itself.

Thanks to those who offered suggestions on this topic. I believe the thread might have been hijacked so I’m replying to my original post. I’ve run the check disk and scan from within File Explorer on my system and got no errors on my SSD. Brian, you mentioned running some other software to do some sort of disk test but I was not familiar with it and inadvertently deleted your post. Can you provide the name of that utility you referenced again?
I have downloaded and installed the trial version of Casper which I intend to run. After further poking around, I think my issue could be the external USB drive I was attempting to save the created backup image to. I’ve ordered a new external USB drive and will try again when it arrives and report back.

Subject: Backup recommendations for SSD system with problem SSD
Hi List,
I’ve seen posts on numerous lists of late regarding accessible backup and partitioning software so I thought I’d pose my question to those who are disk savvy for guidance.
I have a Windows 10 system purchased in April 2021 which has a 1TB SSD drive C. I think this drive must be having problems because my last attempts to do an image backup to an external USB drive have failed using Macrium Reflect. I also installed Paragon backup today and that attempted image backup also failed. I really want to do some sort of backup before I consider replacing this SSD but am out of ideas since my image backups keep failing. Since Windows 10 came installed on this system, I’m a bit unclear what my next step would be if I replace the SSD but don’t have a complete image backup I could restore to the replaced SSD drive.
I welcome any recommendations on how I might proceed to get my system running where I can again do regular image backups. Other than the failed image backups I experience and my system rebooting for no apparent reason from time to time, everything else seems to function ok. I have been storing all data files in Dropbox folders in the event things go further south.
Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

You do not say what make and model this SSD happens to be, but one thing I'd be certain to do is take a look at what either the manufacturer's own disk management software is telling you about its state, or something like CrystalDiskInfo is saying. If either one is telling you the drive is failing, then your first order of business should be getting your user data off to another drive as promptly as possible, regardless of whether you can get a full system image or not.
If you acquire a replacement drive, you could just clone the existing one to it or could use the "drive transfer" software that comes with it (most have something like this) to snag an image from your current drive if it's possible.
But you don't want to take any longer with getting your user data off than is necessary, since if the SSD dies your probability of any recovery is quite low and would be very expensive.

If two image backups failed, I hate to suggest trying another, it isn't likely to fix your problem.
Now, in fact, the first thing I'd do is look at the drive's properties in this pc, go to the tools tab and check the drive. The problem might be some inconsistency that windows chkdsk can repair, rather than a hardware issue. Such problems may make image backups fail to work. If that doesn't get it, time to get an external drive of some sort, back up the data, download a copy of windows from microsoft and do a fresh install on a new drive. Since your computer is licensed with microsoft already, doing this should cause you no issue except the suffering involved in reinstalling software.
