Moderated Grade 2 braille input and numbers
guy schlosser
Hello everyone. If I use my focus to enter some text, and enter a phone number such as 419–5 55–1212, I am having a strange issue. If I enter the number sign and type the number in upper cells (dot one being the number one, etc.), enter a punctuation symbol such as a dash, then, similar numbers, jaws is not treating the numbers after the punctuation symbol as numbers. It is writing them as letters. For example, 419 – EEE-abab. Is there anyway to correct that? I have my input and output both said to grade 2 contracted braille. Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

Hi Guy,
In UEB you have to put the number sign again after the punctuation sign. There are a couple that you don't, but the dash you do.

Which braille code such as English Braille American English (EBAE) or Unified English Braille (UEB)? And which version of JAWS are you running? I am an UEB reader and I run JAWS 2023, and I'm experiencing Braille translation issues.

Guy, as stated by others, in UEB dashes terminate numeric mode, so fore your software to announce characters after a dash as numbers, the numeric mode indicator must be repeated. I understand you may be wanting your numeric sequences to be read aloud for personal notation purposes, and that’s fine. When I want JAWS or my note taker to do this (and save space), I use the continuation indicator (dot 5) instead. This shows your technology the whole sequence is all numbers, so your devices (and otherUEB readers will read it as a number (like a phone number). Hope this helps.

Hey there Bill. Do I put that dot five before or after the number sign? I would assume before? This is weird because when I checked my language profile my contracted braille is set for US grade 2. Is there a reason it’s using UAB instead?

Put the dot five after each sequence of numbers that you would otherwise need to put a hyphen and a numeric indicator after. Ex.: Wh123(dot 5)456(dot 5)6789. Hope this helps.

Guy, I should have mentioned that when using the continuation indicator that makes the first number indicator the only one needed in this kind of symbols sequence. So, start with a numeric indicator, put in the first three digits, then the first continuation indicator (dot five), followed by the next three digits, and then the second continuation indicator, and finish with the final four digits(. When done this should appear as one continuous symbols sequence with no spaces , only one numeric indicator and one continuation indicator between the area code and the next three digits and one between that second three digits and the last four.) This eliminates the need for the two hyphens and the two additional numeric indicators. This equally legitimate method of displaying a numeric sequence, such as a phone number, saves more space than the standard one, which can be critical to fitting such information on small cards such as business or 3 x 5 cards.

That did not work. It actually converted the dot fives to quotes. What did work though as putting number signs before each number group. After I press the spacebar it or enter, though it rewrites the phone number the correct way as I would be used to seeing it. Very weird. Thanks so much for your help in figuring this out.

HI bill,
Can you put a hyphen in after each of the 2 indicators if you want the number to have hyphens in them?
And I wonder if all of this is why the UK does dots between those numbers instead of hypehns.
