Open up a new message in Outlook. Then press ALT+F then t. Arrow down to mail. Tab to Editor Options, press Space. Now, arrow down to Advanced and start tabbing. You will find the Autocorrect checkbox there, which you can turn off with space.

Thanks, all. How do I implement these changes in a uniform way across all word documents? In Word, bring up the file menu with alt+f, choos "Options" - it may be quicker to arrow up than down, choose "Proofing", choose "Auto correct" and have a play in there.
