Is there a keystroke to select the text from the cursor to the end of sentence? There are commands to select text from the cursor:
to the end of the next word, shift + control + right to the end of the line, shift + end and to the end of the paragraph. shift + control + down There's also a command to select a line's worth of text: shift + down. But is there a command to select the text from the cursor to the end of sentence? |

I am not on my computer, but try this. The keystroke to go to the next sentence is either alt number pad to if you are on an older version of JAWS, or alt non-pad plus if you are on a newer version of JAWS. In addition to that keystroke, add the shift key and see if that does what you’re looking to do.

I may have your question wrong, but if I am in a word document, I use F8 to cycle through options to select a word, sentence, paragraph, or whole document. It will, however, select an entire sentence, not just the point from your curser on.

I don’t think so. However, a recent thread led me to this layered command that might substitute. It enables you to select between placemarker and current position, meaning in this case that you would position the cursor at the end of the sentence:
JAWS key-spacebar, then m.

Cynthia, F8 in Word is interesting. Repeatedly pressing F8 will select the word, sentence, paragraph, of whole document the cursor is in. It's called extended selection mode. It's not a JAWS command. It's a bit puzzling. I was hoping for a selection command that can could allow me to add sentence by sentence to the selection. It seems like that would make it easier to cut and paste units of text around when doing writing and editing. I wonder if any screen reader can do that?

I don’t understand the objection here. First, who cares if it’s a JAWS or a Word feature? More important, using F8, you can select and copy a sentence, paste it into a separate document, return to the original document, select a second sentence, copy it, paste it into the second document, and so on. I use F8 all the time, and it’s a tremendous time-saver that also helps organize my thought process. One caution. If a paragraph consists of a single sentence, it will be copied and pasted as a paragraph. Not a big deal, but be aware an extra return will show up.

I've gone through at least 10 different websites that are well known for esoteric selection tips, and there are a couple of techniques for selecting whole sentences (or what word thinks are whole sentences, abbreviations like "Mr." and "Mrs." can screw things up), but none I can find for current cursor position to end of sentence. Almost all references to doing that sort of selection suggest using word by word selection until you get to the end of sentence. I suppose if punctuation is being announced with each word selected, you could do that until a word is terminated by a typical sentence ending punctuation mark. But all the techniques so far discussed (at least those supported by Word itself) end up in full sentence selections, one way or another. This is another instance where having easy access to real left click as opposed to emulated left click can be very handy, as with the cursor anywhere in a sentence a CTRL + left click selects the entire sentence. You do, of course, have to have routed the PC cursor to the JAWS Cursor so that both are in the same spot. Adrian, I imagine it would be helpful if F8 worked in other applications were there is text, like browsers. Also, F8 can only select one sentence worth of text at a time. If there were 2 techniques available, either copying and pasting sentence by sentence or incrementally adding adjacent sentences to the selection before copying and pasting, it seems like the latter would take less effort, be faster, and prone to fewer errors.
Also, Windows provides easy ways to incrementally add words and paragraphs to the selection, so it strikes me as a bit puzzling as to why there is nothing like that at the sentence-level. I can see how using the JAWS place marker technique might be a workaround. But is there a reason Windows can't provide the feature in the first place? |

But if you'd like to see a feature added to virtually any Microsoft program offering, go to the Feedback option in the Help ribbon and request it. I don’t have a satisfactory response for your thoughts outside MS Word beyond pointing out logistical difficulties in defining a sentence. If there’s an abbreviation in a sentence, such as periods following Dr. or Ms., they’re likely to cut short what a human reader would consider an entire sentence. Quotation marks can also throw sentence-seeking computers for a loop.
I broach this question from one who was long ago gratified to find the F8 solution, but I can understand the desire for single-keystroke solutions that go further. For now, I’m content with F8, placemarkers and the various text selection options.
