Moderated how do i open the accessibility options in adobe acrobat reader with Jaws?
molly the blind tech lover
Greetings.
I am trying to read my flashlight manual, which is a PDF. When I open the PDF in adobe acrobat, nothing happens. How do I bring up the accessibility options in adobe acrobat that would allow Jaws to read the PDF? I need to read the manual so I can figure out how to turn this flashlight off. Darn electronically controlled switch. Any answers will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

In Adobe Reader, before opening anything, Press ALT+E to get to the Edit Menu. Then up arrow to Accessibility. Open with Enter and find Accessibility Assistant. However, I don't think this is your problem. Lots of times, when you open a PDF in Adobe, you are in what JAWS thinks of as a Blank screen. Press CTRL+K, then Escape. This might be enough to kick start things. Alternatively, you can just focus on the PDF file with File Explorer, open the Context Menu with SHIFT+F1, and arrow to and activate Convenient OCR with JAWS. Molly,
Also, don't discount the fact that it's possible that the PDF is image scanned, and may need to be OCRed. And if you need to scan it, then JAWS Key and O, then D.
All the best

I always have trouble reading more than a single
page in a PDF, I've tried control page down, which I always thought was to
advance to the next page, but that doesn't ever work.
Sometimes I can just arrow down line by line, but
mostly it stops on the page I originally opened.
Is there a guide somewhere for working with PDF
files?
I typically just convert them to TXT because of the
hassles of trying to read them over the years.
Thanks.

That works for scanned images of PDFs. Now, for the file itself. Still use the JAWS key, and o for the OCR. However, press’s f for file. Of course, you can’t do this when the file’s open but closed and on your computer’s hard drive somewhere, documents, maybe. After you wait until all the OCR results are there, you can “Open in Word …” that’s at the bottom of the result page, and it works really well … at least for me. Ashleigh Piccinino
