Moderated non-visual way to utilize grouping rows and columns in Excel?
Hi all,
I have a monster spreadsheet that has numerous columns I have to skip over. I used to just hide them, but this is confusing to others who also use the file. They ask that I group the columns so I can hide and unhide them. I’m trying to figure out if I can do this. I know I can create the grouping by keyboard, but I’m trying to figure out how to know if some columns are already part of a group and how to hide/unhide them by keyboard versus pointing at the icon in the header, which is how sighted people do it. Anyone know?
Using Office 365 and JAWS 2022.

Robin,
I don’t have an answer for you but you might consider subscribing to the office-accessibility@groups.io list. You can do so by sending a blank email to:

That list has many smart Microsoft Office users who are great at offering help. I believe in full disclosure so I will admit that I’m the owner of that list as of the past couple of months because David Goldfield who created it had time constraints. Brian Vogel does an excellent job moderating it and offering many helpful answers.

Ok, I’ve figured out that options appear on the ribbon to hide and unhide what you have grouped. That will work for the file I’m working on now. I’m still not clear on how I would know what is or is not grouped if I get a file from someone else. From the examples online, someone could have groups embedded in groups so you can hide smaller or larger sets of columns or rows at once.

If memory serves, and if the worksheet is not immense, you can tell this as you traverse a row, or down a column, when there is a jump from, say column C to column X, or row 23 to row 55 as you go across a row or down a column, respectively.
I'd rather take this to Office Accessibility if we want to dig deep, as I'd need some example to work with so see what's what and determine keystrokes. I have very limited availability today, as we're supposed to have a hard freeze here either tomorrow night or Saturday night, and I need to get my orchid collection back into the house before that happens.
