Hi, it's Annabelle.
I'm having trouble accessing the classic "Taskbar And Start Menu" settings in Windows 10. Every time I press enter on "Taskbar and Start Menu", I'm taken to the new version made in "Settings". Unfortunately that version is not easy to access with screenreaders like JAWS. I wish there was a way that I could access classic parameters made for earlier versions of Windows, as they are more suitable for the sight challenged. Specifically I'm trying to turn off the parameter to "Click on submenus when I pause on them", as it drives me mad! If someone could please make a registry key for me, I would kindly appreciate it! Thank you!

Annabelle, You need to be a bit clearer about what it is you're trying to change and where. The setting you describe is nowhere to be found under Windows 10 and I cannot get a start menu folder to do what you're describing. Even a clear explanation of the behavior you hate, and how to make it occur, would be useful. --

For example, I press Alt to access the menu bar of an application, like ITunes, and if it begins with a submenu, the submenu automatically opens instead of letting me scroll down with the arrow keys. How do I prevent submenus from opening when I pause on them?

What's with the censorship by spelling? And, Who's Joe? I'm confused as to what this has to do with the problem of preventing submenus from opening when I pause on them with the mouse, or in my case, the arrow keys.

Can you give me an example I can work with other than iTunes or any "Apple related" application under Windows, as I don't use any of those. I have never seen what you describe. ALT simply throws focus to the menus or the ribbon tabs, you must continue hitting additional letters, numbers, or a combination of the two (with letters being by far the most common, and used alone) before the next thing happens. I don't think anyone will be able to solve your problem without experiencing it directly and then figuring out what's going on and if that can be stopped. --

Have you used another screen reader such as Narrator or NVDA to see if the problem occurs with those screen readers? It could be a JAWS problem that could be fixed by using the JAWS installer for your current version of JAWS to do a JAWS repair.

Hi, Annabelle. I'm not sure how these things happen, but, as we use JAWS, sometimes files are overwritten, and sometimes they are overwritten incorrectly. One other thing you could try is the following. Put JAWS temporarily into Default alternate user directory mode. This can be accomplished in the following way, 1. Press INSERT plus SPACE to enter layered commands. 2. Press the letter Z. JAWS will say, Default alternate user directory mode It will also unload any modifications you have made to the default settings in JAWS. Because of this, JAWS may begin speaking slower or with a different voice. Now that JAWS is in Default alternate user directory mode, open one of the programs that was giving you trouble with the classic "Taskbar And Start Menu" Settings, and see if the trouble continues in this mode. If it does not keep happening, the problem was caused by something that was changed in the JAWS settings. That's strange! The problem disappears in default directory mode, or whatever you said it is. So what shall I do next? Do I just recreate the custom profile I made of Eloquence?

Hi, Annabelle. No. I'd do a repair of JAWS by using the installer for the version of JAWS currently running on your computer. You would do this by running the installer, and it will come up with a repair option. You will lose the changes you have made to JAWS since installing it, but you will also lose the annoying behavior of JAWS that is currently plaguing you.

I tried the Repair option within the installer, and nothing changed.

Now that JAWS is in Default alternate user directory mode, open one of the programs that was giving you trouble with the classic "Taskbar And Start Menu" Settings, and see if the trouble continues in this mode. If it does not keep happening, the problem was caused by something that was changed in the JAWS settings. If the problem continues in this mode, it is a problem occuring with JAWS, even in its default state.
Now, to exit Default alternate user directory mode,
1. Press INSERT plus SPACE to enter layered commands.
2. Press the letter Z. JAWS will say,
Default alternate user directory mode off.
If the problem was absent when Default alternate user directory mode was active, I would suggest a clean reinstall of JAWS, if the repair does not work.

Hi again, Annabelle. One thing I forgot to say, because it is such a habit with me is this. If you haven't restarted your computer after the problem started happening, I would do so before doing anything else. This often clears up problems in Windows, JAWS, and other programs you may be running.

Hi, Annabelle. I don't understand why nothing changed when you tried the repair option. The repair option is supposed to replace all the settings files, and set everything back to JAWS defaults. Something you have changed since JAWS was installed is causing the problem, and the file or files in question that you made changes to could not be loaded in Default User Directory Mode. This is why the problem did not happen while Default User Directory Mode was active. The only other thing I can suggest is to delete the version of JAWS you are running, and reinstall it. I would also uncheck the box that you will see that allows you to migrate settings from previous versions of JAWS. This will not cause you to lose your license, or have to reactivate JAWS.

I did that, but still nothing changed. What's even weirder is I have to have the Windows 10 CD in my CD Rom drive while restarting my machine, otherwise, if I don't, the machine seems to go into this endless cycle of restarts. Could it be something got messed up in the Bios when I pressed the reset button by accident when I meant to press the power button instead?
