Moderated Say pane name with different voice

Udo Egner-Walter

Hi Mark,

the difference between voice profiles and aliases is as follows:
If you download a speech synthesizer (voice) from FS homepage JAWS will create a file for this voice with a .vpf extension. This file is a voice profile. You can make your own voice profile file by changing parameters of a voice in a dialog in JAWS main app. Since I don't have an English version I can't say the exact name but it's in the first menu of JAWS main window. You can select voice profiles by using the shortcut JAWS+Ctrl+S.

Alias on the other hand are short names for a voice setting regarding a special synthesizer voice. For example if you use Eloquence voice you will notice that JAWS will speak with different voice if you activate JAWS Cursor. You can find the Aliases for a special voice synthesizer in the JAWS Setting Center (JAWS+6). Here you can make your own Aliases with different settings.

Whereas you can change pretty much any setting for the voice profiles, you can only specify a different voice of the same synthesiser for the Aliias, as well as the speed and pitch. Aliases were used in Speech and Sound Scheme for different speaking of different controls. Voice profiles were used if you want to change to another voice right at the moment. Voice profiles can be set for a special app whearas Voice aliases only can be used in Speech and Sound Schemes (at least as far as I know).

Regarding a script for panel speaking:

I should have known better: at first glance when scripting, you think it should be easy. But when you take a closer look, you realise that it's not so easy after all.

That doesn't mean it's impossible, but it requires more effort. I think the other users will be less interested, so I suggest that we talk privately about the topic, provided you want to do so.

Kind regards
Udo

Hi Udo,

I'm a bit unclear about the difference between a voice profile and a voice alias. But it would be great to have some distinct voice dedicated to the pane.

For your first question, when pressing f6, it would be great if it worked both when moving the focus and when pressing JAWS + t
For example, in Outlook:
If the focus is in the inbox and the user presses f6, we'd hear JAWS say
in pane voice: status bar
in regular voice: display settings, button

Then if we press JAWS + t, we'd hear
in regular voice: Outlook
in pane voice: status bar

For consistency, it might be helpful to have a voice that is dedicated to saying the application window name. For example:
JAWS + t
in app window voice: outlook
in pane voice: status bar

For your second question: yes, you are right.

sincerely,

Mark

Hi Mark,

I think it should be possible by using JAWS script. But first let me ask for some details:

- Am I right you want JAWS to speak the panel name in another Voice Profile only if the focus changes?
- Am I right you want JAWS to speak the panel name in another Voice Profile only for the panel and not for other control types like list items or similar?

If you clarify your needs maybe I can help out by using JAWS scripting.

All the best
Udo

When pressing F6, the keyboard focus moves to a control type in another pane.  When the focus is moved this way, JAWS announces the pane name and then the control type name. Is it possible to assign a different voice to speak the pane?  In Speech and Sound schemes it's possible to do with this groups.
