Moderated how to get Jaws to read youtube subtitles

JM Casey

Hello.

I don’t think there is a *specific* setting, however I do feel it ought to be possible to configure jaws to monitor the small space where the subtitles appear and report changes. I feel like this is something I used to know how to do, even, but as I haven’t thought of such a thing in a while I’ve forgotten how.

It still may not be the best solution for subtitles, but then, I don’t think any single solution is, really – certainly my own method of getting the data in a text file and reading along with a disconnected braille display isn’t totally ideal, but at least that way, I get everything. Obviously this works best for movies with soft-coded subs.

You might want to ask the Sparrow about why this is happening. There might be a setting in Jaws somewhere, but I am not knowledgeable of it.

As I mentioned before, there have been times when I'm watching a video and
the screen-reader will, seemingly at random, be focused on the subtitles and
read them as the video goes on. Of course 90% of the time I don't actually
want them when this happens, and I don't know how to make this behaviour
consistent when I do.
I generally rpefer reading subtitles on a braille display at my own pace,
but I also generally watch youtube videos when I'm not at the computer.

They are on, but its just a bit of a line in the window, can't really read
it that way, no way to scroll.

That's a good question.
There are times when JAWS seems to randomly just start reading the subtitles as they go, but ti's definitely not consistent -- also definitely not something you want all of the time.
