I've had some success with nordpass as well, it is quite accessible,
but, having said that, I am not that satisfied, so maybe I will try
Keypass as well. Nordpass uses a web interface. It is free.
Unfortunately I never tried the ios part.

What happens if you put something like your Apple ID in a password
manager? I was thinking of using something like BitWarden or similar but
was wondering if you'd have to leave some passwords out of a vault because
it might be hard to scrape a password from a vault during install.

Hi Marty,

The short answer to your question is yes, KeePass is another app for tracking passwords in the same manner you're using an Excel file to do so. It does include a more robust feature set for your passwords including encryption as you mentioned as well as the ability to utilize the same password database file on a smart phone companion app which allows access to your passwords on another device. You could also do this with Excel running on a smart phone but I haven't found perusing Excel files on a smart phone to be something I care to do.

Alan,

Your steps were very straightforward. I think I've done this
before, but it
felt cleaner this time, for whatever reason. I'm saving your steps. To
your point, I think the browse thing used to open to iCloud by
default and that was throwing me off. This time, it opened to Dropbox immediately.
Interestingly, as I swipe to hear the files in my DropBox list, I am
hearing VO say "in iCloud" just before the date and file size. Not
sure why that is, but the header at the top clearly says Dropbox and
it's the list of files on my DropBox account.

I'm sticking with managing my entries on my laptop. I just couldn't'
figure out how to get a change I made on the database with KeePass
Touch to save to the file on Dropbox. It's like KeePass doesn't
fully support a true synching
option, even though I selected that option when I set up the app. It
would
be nice, but I once overwrote some entries when I saved my iPhone
file back to Dropbox, so I'm a bit gun shy about it.

I do find the Window app very easy to use with JAWS. I like the
simplicity of the interface, use of context menus and old-fashioned menu system.

Hi Robin,

I also use KeePass on my Windows 10 computer and KeePass Touch on my
iPhone
13 Mini. Those two are both accessible and enable me to store what I
need without any fuss. I like that when a KeePass Touch entry is
open on my iPhone, I can swipe to the password field and do a single
finger double tap on the screen and the password value is
automatically copied to the clipboard for easy pasting elsewhere. I
always manage my KeePass password entries on my desktop computer
because I find having a full screen keyboard available for input
much easier. I also keep my KeePass database file in a Dropbox
folder and these are the steps I use to update that database file on
my iPhone when I've changed the database on my computer:

1. Open KeePass Touch. If the app prompts you for Face or Touch ID and
opens your database file, place focus on the Files back button in
the upper left corner of the screen and double tap.
2. If you don't automatically open an existing database file, you
should already be on the Files screen.
3. On the bottomline toolbar at the far right is an Add button which
you should double tap.
4. You'll be given options to Create new database or Import. Execute
Import.
5. Two mor options of Browse and Cancel will appear and you should
execute Browse.
6. I think because I upgraded to iOS 16 earlier today, I was taken
directly to iCloud drive which I did not want so I executed the More
button from the top line menu.
7. I then swiped to Dropbox and double tapped.
8. I then swiped to the applicable KeePass database file and double
tapped on it causing it to load and for KeePass Touch via Voiceover
to provide the most recently date of update. Touch or Face ID should
have granted access provided you have them set up here.

I believe those steps were fewer by two or three steps the last time
I did this but as I said, I updated to iOS 16 earlier today and I
expect that caused the steps to be a bit different.

I'm not totally up-to-date on the latest news but I'm pretty sure I
heard something in the past few days about LastPass being hacked.
You might let your employers know about that.

ignorance, is that I'm storing the shared file on DropBox and it
doesn't' seem like my iPhone opens the newest version of that file
on my phone. It might work better if I was storin the file on
iTunes, but I just haven't gotten there or spent the time to
research it. Because of this, I only update the database on my
Windows laptop and just pull the new file to my phone. I just don't have the synching sorted out in my head.

But I like that it is free and a really simple interface. I haven't tried
any other apps. My company is now using LastPass and I need to explore
that, but it's low on the list of things to conquer.

Marty,
There are some sites for which I let Microsoft Edge retain my password for auto entry -- sites that are not really a risk if someone got into them. Even still, I keep track of the passwords in KeePass, should I ever need to access the site from another device or just have a list of my passwords. For most sites, I do the same process as Alan described, going to KeePass and copying the password then pasting it into the password field on the website. Note that the quick way to do this is to find the entry, and hit the application key on it and arrow down once to the copy password option.

Alan,

Your steps were very straightforward. I think I've done this before,
but it
felt cleaner this time, for whatever reason.

It's like KeePass doesn't fully
support a true synching
option, even though I selected that option when I set up the app. It
would
be nice, but I once overwrote some entries when I saved my iPhone
file back to Dropbox, so I'm a bit gun shy about it.

I like that when a KeePass Touch entry is open
on my iPhone, I can swipe to the password field and do a single
finger double tap on the screen and the password value is
automatically copied to the clipboard for easy pasting elsewhere. I
always manage my KeePass password entries on my desktop computer
because I find having a full screen keyboard available for input much
easier. I also keep my KeePass database file in a Dropbox folder and
these are the steps I use to update that database file on my iPhone
when I've changed the database on my computer:

1. Open KeePass Touch. If the app prompts you for Face or Touch ID and
opens your database file, place focus on the Files back button in the
upper left corner of the screen and double tap.

You
might let your employers know about that.

Van Lant, Robin

Marty,
There are some sites for which I let Microsoft Edge retain my password for auto entry -- sites that are not really a risk if someone got into them.

Hi Marty,

What I would do in your described scenario is to go to the website, open KeePass with the custom shortcut I've created, look up the appropriate entry in my KeePass database, and then do a ctrl + b to copy the username followed by a ctrl + c to copy the password which I would pasted in the appropriate places on the website. I'm not a fan of automatic entry of anything so I much prefer to do the copying and pasting steps manually.

6. I think because I upgraded to iOS 16 earlier today, I was taken
directly to iCloud drive which I did not want so I executed the More button
from the top line menu.
7. I then swiped to Dropbox and double tapped.
8. I then swiped to the applicable KeePass database file and double
tapped on it causing it to load and for KeePass Touch via Voiceover to
provide the most recently date of update. Touch or Face ID should have
granted access provided you have them set up here.

I believe those steps were fewer by two or three steps the last time I did
this but as I said, I updated to iOS 16 earlier today and I expect that
caused the steps to be a bit different.

I'm not totally up-to-date on the latest news but I'm pretty sure I heard

I am using KeePass on my Windows 10 laptop and on my iPhone. It's very
accessible with a simple interface, although I'm sure I'm not using it to
the fullest. My only annoyance, and this is likely my ignorance, is that
I'm storing the shared file on DropBox and it doesn't' seem like my iPhone
opens the newest version of that file on my phone. It might work better if
I was storin the file on iTunes, but I just haven't gotten there or spent
the time to research it. Because of this, I only update the database on my
Windows laptop and just pull the new file to my phone. I just don't have
the synching sorted out in my head.

But I like that it is free and a really simple interface. I haven't tried
any other apps. My company is now using LastPass and I need to explore
that, but it's low on the list of things to conquer.

Hi list,

Which password managers are the most accessible with Jaws and also have an
Accessible IOS app? Has anyone used "dashlane" before? Thanks for any info.

hello, you do not need to pay for password managers. You can use
KeepAssXC which is free, open source and accccessible with which you
could hide your passwords in its encrypted database and save it in
your USB drive or on cloud.

Alan,

Your steps were very straightforward. I think I've done this before, but
it
felt cleaner this time, for whatever reason. I'm saving your steps. To
your point, I think the browse thing used to open to iCloud by default and
that was throwing me off. This time, it opened to Dropbox immediately.
Interestingly, as I swipe to hear the files in my DropBox list, I am
hearing
VO say "in iCloud" just before the date and file size. Not sure why that
is, but the header at the top clearly says Dropbox and it's the list of
files on my DropBox account.

I'm sticking with managing my entries on my laptop. I just couldn't' figure
out how to get a change I made on the database with KeePass Touch to save
to
the file on Dropbox. It's like KeePass doesn't fully support a true
synching
option, even though I selected that option when I set up the app. It
would
be nice, but I once overwrote some entries when I saved my iPhone file
back
to Dropbox, so I'm a bit gun shy about it.

I do find the Window app very easy to use with JAWS. I like the simplicity
of the interface, use of context menus and old-fashioned menu system.

Hi Robin,

I also use KeePass on my Windows 10 computer and KeePass Touch on my iPhone
13 Mini. Those two are both accessible and enable me to store what I need
without any fuss. I like that when a KeePass Touch entry is open on my
iPhone, I can swipe to the password field and do a single finger double tap
on the screen and the password value is automatically copied to the
clipboard for easy pasting elsewhere. I always manage my KeePass password
entries on my desktop computer because I find having a full screen keyboard
available for input much easier. I also keep my KeePass database file in a
Dropbox folder and these are the steps I use to update that database file
on
my iPhone when I've changed the database on my computer:

1. Open KeePass Touch. If the app prompts you for Face or Touch ID and
opens your database file, place focus on the Files back button in the upper
left corner of the screen and double tap.

It’s not free but I’ve found 1password to be accessible. It works with Pc’s as well as I-Os devices. You have to create an account and everything sinks threw that. When you create the account it generates a key so even if someone were to guess the password to the account, they’re not getting in do to not having that key.

PW Safe works well and is free for Windows.  The iOS version is very accessible but there is a one time charge for the app.  You can share the database between your iOS device and Windows using dropbox but there is a charge for that feature.  You can also install iCloud for Windows and access the database across both platforms and that option is free.  I have been using PW Safe on my Mac, iPhone and Win 10/11 machines for about 10 years without any issue.

Stascom is no longer supported and I don’t think they have updated the code in over 2 years.  PW Safe is actively being developed.

the time to research it.

Hi Robin,

I also use KeePass on my Windows 10 computer and KeePass Touch on my iPhone 13 Mini. Those two are both accessible and enable me to store what I need without any fuss. I like that when a KeePass Touch entry is open on my iPhone, I can swipe to the password field and do a single finger double tap on the screen and the password value is automatically copied to the clipboard for easy pasting elsewhere. I always manage my KeePass password  entries on my desktop computer because I find having a full screen keyboard available for input much easier. I also keep my KeePass database file in a Dropbox folder and these are the steps I use to update that database file on my iPhone when I’ve changed the database on my computer:

  1. Open KeePass Touch. If the app prompts you for Face or Touch ID and opens your database file, place focus on the Files back button in the upper left corner of the screen and double tap.
  2. If you don’t automatically open an existing database file, you should already be on the Files screen.
  3. On the bottomline toolbar at the far right is an Add button which you should double tap.
  4. You’ll be given options to Create new database or Import. Execute Import.
  5. Two mor options of Browse and Cancel will appear and you should execute Browse.
  6. I think because I upgraded to iOS 16 earlier today, I was taken directly to iCloud drive which I did not want so I executed the More button from the top line menu.
  7. I then swiped to Dropbox and double tapped.
  8. I then swiped to the applicable KeePass database file and double tapped on it causing it to load and for KeePass Touch via Voiceover to provide the most recently date of update. Touch or Face ID should have granted access provided you have them set up here.

I believe those steps were fewer by two or three steps the last time I did this but as I said, I updated to iOS 16 earlier today and I expect that caused the steps to be a bit different.

I’m not totally up-to-date on the latest news but I’m pretty sure I heard something in the past few days about LastPass being hacked. You might let your employers know about that.

I am using KeePass on my Windows 10 laptop and on my iPhone.   It’s very accessible with a simple interface, although I’m sure I’m not using it to the fullest.  My only annoyance, and this is likely my ignorance, is that I’m storing the shared file on DropBox and it doesn’t’ seem like  my iPhone opens the newest version of that file on my phone.  It might work better if I was storin the file on iTunes, but I just haven’t gotten there or spent the time to research it. Van Lant, Robin

I suppose there are different ways to use them. Let's just start with the reason you might want one. Even if you only have one device, a password manager allows you to more securely store all your passwords in one place. Yes, you could do this with a password protected Word or Excel doc, which is what I did for years. As I started having more an more logins (the way our digital world is going) and wanted more robust passwords, it became difficult to remember them and I often needed to access sites from different devices, namely my iPhone, but also my work computer. Having a password manager allows me to have one place that I can keep all those credentials that I can then access on my laptop or on my iPhone.

Speaking from the experience with my password manager, I have an app installed on my phone and on my laptop. Each app accesses a file I have saved on DropBox that can only be opened by this password manager application. There is a master password I use to open it -- which my phone let's me enter with my fingerprint. This file could be saved just on a hard drive, if you didn't need to access it from another device, but it's smart to have it backed up regularly or in the cloud. I think some of the password managers that you subscribe to also give you a place to store the file on their servers, versus a general file sharing site like DropBox and OneDrive. Wherever the file is saved, it's only opened by your master password and you are toast if you lose that.

Once in the password manager, you access a list of various login credentials that you have added to this secure file. In mine, each entry has a title username, the password, the URL, and a note section. There are ways I can have the app create a password for me and fields where I can set an expiration date to be prompted to change the password for a given site, but I don’t' use those generally. . I also have my entries grouped by category, but you don’t' have to do that.

On my laptop, if I go to a website that needs credentials, I open the password manager, go to the entry for the site and can either use the context key to copy the password or I can open the entry and physically read and/or copy the password to enter on the site. I suspect there are plug-ins that would allow you to do this more directly from within the browser,, but I havent' played with this yet. I could also go to the password manager and click on the URL on the entry and I think that populates the information for me automatically, but I usually forget to try this route in the moment.

On my phone, I will open an app or site that needs a login. I've started to notice that there is often a button above the keyboard and, if I click that, it will open the password manager for me, allow me to search for the name of the needed entry, and it will pull the information in for me directly. I can also just open the manager with my finger print and go to the entry. Double tapping on the password button allows me to copy the password, then I go paste it where needed.

I was very hesitant to start using one of these, but really appreciate it now, especially because I need the credentials on various devices. For reassurance, my app, and certainly others, do have a way to export your entries, should you need to do that. I was afraid to invest all the time in building a collection of entries if there wasn't a way to easily export them if I decided I didn't like the manager or wanted to switch to a different one. I also like that I can add notes to the entries. For example. I have my credit card information saved in my bank login entry.

So here's a question, how do these password managers work, never tried 1. So you go to a site that requires a password, how does that work?

It depends on the app. PW Safe had an extension for Safari, that would allow auto fill, that is no longer the case. I just open PW Safe and copy the userid and password and paste it into the fields. Then I allow Edge to save both for future use.
