Moderated moving jaws settings to another computer

Don H

I am currently running the latest version of Jaws on a Win 10 laptop. Next week I will be getting a new laptop with Windows 11. Is there a easy way to move the Jaws settings to this new laptop?
Thanks

Mike B.

Hi Don,

Two sets of steps below:

You export all your settings by going into the Jaws context menu with, Jaws key + J, if you run Jaws from the system tray.  Then go to, Utilities / Import
/ Export settings submenu and press enter.  Now arrow down to, Export settings..., press enter, now make sure that the, Export all settings radio  button
is selected.  Tab to, next, press spacebar.  You're now in a dialog to select a name & save location, but the file will already be named and the default
location is the desktop, so tab to finish , press enter and all your settings for that Jaws version will be saved to the desktop.  After you install Jaws
just import this settings file.

I know that this is the official Freedom Scientific approach to do it.
But, I have also heard that this doesn't necessarily bring everything
over.
What about copying the ENU folder and pasting it into the new laptop?
I know that this is the best approach, according to Brian Hartgen, for
restoring settings on the same machine for a given version of Jaws.
Will this work similarily on a machine to machine transfer??

Gene Warner

Personally, I would do both. I would definitely not trust Freedom Scientific's recommended approach because the last time I did it that way the JAWS I was importing the settings into refused to import the settings.

Hi Mike,

Personally that's what I do, copy and paste tmy ENU folder in another computer but, when I don't know if someone has the skillset to do this it's kind of hard to explain.  To get to the ENU folder you have to explain how to unhide the AppData folder and then access the Roaming folder...

Mike

I know exactly what you mean <grin>!! Brian Hartgen works in a world
where he can assume his users have a certain level of knowledge beyond the
basics; or that they wish to get to that level.
Freedom Scientific cannot make those assumptions so they must stick to the
recommendation of using the built-in algorithm that Jaws employs.
What's good is that there are often multiple ways to accomplish the same
end; and that's where lists such as this one and guys like Hartgen shine.

Steve Nutt

Yep, I do it this way. JAWS, Utilities, Explore Settings, then copy
everything from that folder, Control A, Control C, then go back into Explore
Settings and paste, with Control V.

All the best

I have never done that, simply going to Explore Settings in Utilities should get you there.

Hi Steve,

Thank you very much for this shorter and much easier way.  I've never gone to the ENU folder this way but, I'll be using your directions now!  Thanks again.

Hi Steve,

I've never noticed this before but, in Windows7 this Explore Utilities Folder option is not appear as it does in the same Jaws versions that it does in Windows10.  I always assumed that if J2022, for example, would be the same no matter what Windows OS version it was installed to and capable of running the particular Jaws version.

Have you tried? , quote migrate settings. Question quote. You might be able to export them somehow, importing them into your new laptop.

I can’t remember, but I know it didn’t get a couple of settings for me when I tried it in JAWS 2021.

I think it blew my punctuation settings. Anyway, copying files across is far more reliable than letting software try to import it.
