Moderated JAWS 22 Not Reading File Names By Character In File Explorer

Mark Fisher

Hi - happy weekend.
I've noticed lately that JAWS 22 latest release is not reading file names in file explorer letter by letter.
Using JAWS 22 and Windows 10.
If I go to a folder in file explorer, ensure it has focus, press the F2 key to edit the name, when i left or right arrow through the name, nothing is spoken.
When I'm editing, commands such as JAWS Key+Numpad 4 or 5 or 6 are not behaving as I would expect. Highlighting the text using Ctrl+Shift+left or right arrow will read the newly highlighted text.
Any clues?
Cheers

Hi, Mark. I am using

Windows 10, Version 21H2 (OS Build 19044.1949)

JAWS Version 2022.2207.25 ILM

I am not experiencing the problem you describe with JAWS 2022, and Windows 10, not reading filenames character by character in File Explorer. May I suggest a repair of your version of JAWS using the installation file that you used to install your version of JAWS. This may correct the problem.

Hello Mark:

Could you provide a bit more information here? When did this problem start happening? Tell me how to replicate your problem.

Hi Mark,

If these are folders that are default / syystem created folders you can't do this.  The folder has to be a folder that's created by you the user in order for it to be edited.

Take care.  Mike.  Sent from my iBarstool.

Hi All

These are folders and files created  by me.
It does seem to be intermittent - this morning, all is working as you would expect.

So it might just be JAWS getting itself a little confused. I will try the repair as well just to see if that helps.
As mentioned above, the issue arises when I am in file explorer and I try to rename a file or folder that I've created. When editing the name, JAWS would not read each letter as I left and right arrowed across the name.
Anyway, I'll put it down to a problem that is hard to reproduce.

Thanks all and have a great weekend.

Hi,

Why press F2 to read a file name character by character? Simply press the Insert Up Arrow key twice quickly, when you’re on the file name.

I don’t like the F2 method, because you can change the name of a file by accident.

All the best

Steve

Hi Steve

Agree - however, I was actually trying to change the file name and was getting no feedback from JAWS hence the question.

Ah, I beg your pardon, I thought you were just trying to read it.
