Moderated letter navigation in a file list
Good morning:
For some reason, when I look at a list of my files in a folder and type3 letters such as OBJ to find a file beginning with the word objection, jaws is only navigating to the first letter, (o). So I have to go through all my files beginning with (O) to find the file. Is there any way to fix this?
Thanks.
Hi John,
I find I have to type the first 2 or 3 letters really quickly to get closer to what I’m looking for.
Hope that helps.
Cheers
Zel

One thing that just came to mind, for Windows to do multiple character searches, you need to type the letters or characters close enough to each other for them to be used that way. Wait too long between letters and Windows will treat them as the first letter of a search. I don't know what the actual time out is, but generally if I type the letters within a second of each other they are used as subsequent letters of the same search.

I’m guessing you type those three letters fast. In that case, which program are you using when you encounter this problem? I recall having done so in the past inside specific programs, although right now I can’t remember which ones.

Same here. Depending on the letter combinations my typing speed will sometimes only allow me to manage two before I've already paused too long.
The phrase, "First letter nav," gets used a lot because that's what's done the vast majority of the time. But, "First letters (plural) nav," is actually supported if you are a fast enough typist. Most touch typists can manage at least 2 letters fast enough, sometimes 3. But even narrowing to the first 2 letters of a clump of file names can be helpful.
Personally, I'd either use the File Explorer search function to limit the files shown first or, in those instances where I know the file name (or part of a file name, plus its extension) is (are) unique, it's way easier to find it using something such as the Everything Search tool.

Hi,
I tried it in the past and couldn’t get it to work for some things. I just tried again in my documents folder and it works. I typed the letters really fast, and only 3.
