To elaborate on what Ed said about relative page number, getting a page number depends on how the document is structured and what exactly you want. I'm adjusting someone's dissertation in Word and the front matter uses Roman numerals. A new section is started for all the chapters, which allows for restarting page numbering in Arabic numerals. In this case, the Alt + delete technique gets the page number on the page header, while the JAWS + 3 or status bar techniques reads the absolute page number. So, if I'm at chapter 1 and am on page 1 of the dissertation according to the number in the header, when I press JAWS + 3, I hear page 15 because there are 14 pages of front matter. But if I press Alt + delete, I will get the page number on the page in the header. In this case, 1.

There is a JAWS command, ALT with Delete. You hear where the cursor is on a specific page in terms of inches from top and edge as well as the page number.

When I earned my bachelor’s degree, I was able to check and see which page I was in on my MS Word documents. After a ten year absence from being in a university. I am not sure how to find which page I am on. Any ideas are appreciated.

You and Justin are indeed correct, but it was news to me, as it will be to Steve. That key combo didn’t used to include the page number while in Word. For that reason, I would interrupt the verbalization after the top and side margin numbers without realizing there was more to come. The two of you got me to double-check and learn something.

Sorry, I gave the wrong keystroke combo. Instead of the numpad zero key it should be the period/dot key. Pressing ALT and the numpad period key will result in Jaws reading the relative location, such as “PC Cursor active 1.92 inches from left, 9.56 inches from top, page 1” as I just copied and pasted from Jaws history after pressing ALT and numpad period key while in a Word document with Word 2016. My apologies for not confirming the keystroke before my prior post.

Yet another way to hear where you are in a document and on the page: using a keyboard with a numpad and Jaws in laptop mode, with numlock turned off, press AL/T and the zero key on the numpad. Jaws will announce the page number and how far down the page and from the left margin your cursor is. That is what I use and the response I get most of the time. For some reason intermittently the Jaws response will be page number then some coordinates that I have never understood. Closing and restarting Jaws usually produces the page number and location in inches from top and left margin. BTW – I have never figured out how to do this on my laptop without a numpad.
Using latest version of Jaws2022, Windows 10.
