Moderated Jaws And Chrome Books

Tom Behler

Hello, everyone.

I am in the process of looking for a small tablet that I can use when traveling, so I don’t have to drag my main laptop computer with me.

I might be able to obtain a used Chrome Book for this purpose, but have a few very basic questions:

1.  Can Chrome Books work with Jaws?

2.  What operating system do relatively recent Chrome Books use?

3.  Could I get the Chrome Book to work with the Microsoft 365 suite of products?  I have an annual subscription that allows me to add several more devices.

Thanks for any info.

Hello Tom:

Chromebooks run an operating system that is completely different from Windows. Thus, you will not be able to run either the JAWS screen reader or the Office Suite with which you are familiar. Chromebooks have their own screen reader and their own set of commands. Alas, you would have to learn a whole new system and screen reader. Sorry.

Best wishes,

Curtis Chong

Don’t know anythign about it, but the Chromebooks screen-reader is called Chromevox. I don’t know if there is another one available at this time (I suspect not), but a nice thing is that, like Talkback with Android, Chromevox is built into the operating system.

Apparently, you can run MS Office from a chromebook using the web applications.

Thanks for this response, Curtis.

I wondered if that was the case, which is why I decided to ask the question.

Will be interested in thoughts from any other list members.

I may need to focus my attention on windows tablets.
