Another trick if you have to use your laptop in public without an

The best idea I have is the use of a dummy display blank, and then
configuring windows to only display on that screen.

If you need local access, unplugging the HDMI dongle will enable the
local screen. Remote support software wouldn't care either way.

Sometimes it doesn't even have to be that fast for the sighted person to not be able to tell what it is saying.

I have been on the front desk of our local blind society reading through things and sighted people have asked how on earth can I understand what it is saying. This is on a lower speed then I am use to because it is a computer a number of blind people use so I couldn't leave it at the speed I am use to or the next blind person might not be able to understand it so therefor they wouldn't be able to slow it down.

None of my family can understand my voice speed and they are all sighted.

Well if it has an audio port, it will work, as I can do it with an HDMI to VGA converter.
I can just never find out if these "dummy" devices have an audio port like the HDMI to VGA does.

HDMI stands for High-Definition Multimedia Interface and, as such, has all of the bits "rolled into one," including video and audio.

You'd have to try it and see, but since HDMI generally takes everything down its pipe, it would probably work.  But never having tried precisely what you'd like to do, I'd have to experiment with it just as you will to confirm or refute.

If you happen to have an HDMI cable that connects to something else in the house, most likely a TV, but not necessarily, you could experiment using that.  Once the HDMI pipeline is in place what you can do with an active one should be the same whether it's a real one or a dummy.

And that's where either a conventional headset, bluetooth earbuds, or bluetooth compatible hearing aids are a godsend.

But I agree that if you're someone who can listen to a synth going at lightning speed, and I know many blind users who do just that, the probability that any listening ears beyond those with that same skillset understanding anything is very small indeed.

I have still never been able to wrap my head around a synth speaking at well above double the normal human speech rate, and have had various clients I'm assisting with technical (as opposed to screen reader) problems slow down rates when I want to be able to understand what the screen reader is saying based upon what I am doing.

Brian,
Can you tell if this dummy HDMI has an audio port?
I want an HDMI dummy with an audio port for Roku type of devices, to make a pocket size TV.
Currently I'm doing this with an HDMI to VGA that has audio out, but it uses a short cable that I fold in half, but an HDMI dummy would be better if it has audio out.
I've asked for this information on the Amazon.com site on these, but nobody ever answered my question.

If no one else knows how to use JAWS (or unload it at the very least) then the situation you describe is precisely what you'll have.
The very reason for being of the screen shade is to prevent "over the shoulder" viewing, by anyone, when that's what you wish to prevent. Once the screen is off, it's off until you either flip the toggle, unload/exit JAWS, or reboot.
The reboot part may not still be accurate if a setting has been added to make screen shade persistent unless you turn it off, but I have not heard anything about that.  That was my reason for posting a reference to an earlier topic that discussed how to make that happen without a persistent option.

Sounds like a case of wanting to eat your cake and have it too.
A screensaver alone should work for you, or the screen shade.
But you cannot have a screensaver going while the computer is in use.

Hi, I have been following this topic and have now turned on my jaws screen shade. One question though will this stop showing the pictures on my screen saver? I ask because this is mainly what my nieces like to see on my laptop. The screen shade will stop anyone else using the computer because none of my family knows how to use Jaws but my nieces will be disappointed if they can’t see the pictures.

Thanks.

Just so that toggle for the JAWS Screen Shade is included in this topic which directly references the function, it is:  JAWS Key + Space, F11

See this topic from May 2018 on this very group, that was entitled screen curtain, from approximately the time that the feature was introduced if you want more background.

Hi Angel,

You stated earlier that you're running Jaws 18, Screen Shade isn't available in Jaws18, it became first available in Jaws2018 and Windows 10.

Take care.  Mike.  Sent from my iBarstool.

Thank you all for your kind and most gracious assistance.  I will look into using this screen shade feature.  I have saved Brian’s post with the key stroke for turning it on.  It will surely come in handy; when my dear grand children visit.

And, for good measure

1. A YouTube Video on how to Turn On/Off the JAWS Screen Shade
2. Message
in the topic, Automatically start the screen shade with Jaws, that covers how to insert screen shade into an autostart script.  All the messages leading up to the one referenced are bottom quoted.
