Moderated Jaws reporting checked after list items and on desktop
Curtis Chong
Greetings:
Whenever you purchase a new computer, there are two things which, by default, have to be fixed.
First, file extensions. For whatever reason, Microsoft has for decades not had file extensions turned on by default. Thus, when you are focused on a document in File Explorer, you don’t hear the .docx or .doc extension associated with the file name.
Secondly, checkboxes. When looking at a list of files, JAWS says not checked because File Explorer, by default, provides us with a check box instead of usual selected/not selected choice.
The easiest way to fix this is to get into the File Explorer Options menu. Open the search menu with Windows s. Now, type “file e explorer options”. A result appears and JAWS says this is in the Control panel. Press Enter. Now, Control Tab to the advanced dialog page and tab across to the tree view. In this tree view you can turn off the hiding of known file extensions and the use of checkboxes. I have to do this for every new computer which I help blind people to set up.
Warmly,
Curtis Chong

Hi,
I hope you can fix it if you: Open a folder. For example documents folder. Press ALT key and move with right arrow to View menu, press spacebar. Move with up or down arrow to show. It is in the end of the menu, open it with Enter Move with down arrow to Item check boxes , press Enter
Hope this helps Artur From: main@jfw.groups.io <main@jfw.groups.io> On Behalf Of Murray Peat
Hi there, I just got a new work laptop today, gone from an HP to a Lenovo.
After some time to set things up I have noticed that when on the desktop Jaws reports on each icon like Word checked and excel checked etc. Also in the documents folder after each item Jaws reports checked. The sighted I T person could not provide any insights. The only thing I can think of is that the laptop does have one of those touch screens that operates with a pen. The screen has been disabled.
I guess the highlight as I move through each item may contain an element that Jaws is reporting as checked.
I am using Jaws22 with Windows 10 Enterprise.
Any advice would be most welcome
With thanks Murray

And just to comment on this, I haven’t had this problem at all. Knock on wood. <smile> I hope you get it figured out.
