Moderated strange issue when checking for Jaws updates
Gene Warner
I got a response from Freedom Scientific about the installer voice. They said that because the installer voice was actual recordings taking them out reduced the size of the installer significantly. There was also the logistics involved in recording the messages in all the languages they supported.

Both reasons, installer size and the availability of Narrator, as reasons for taking the installer voice out make sense. Gene... On 7/28/2022 10:12 AM, Mike Pietruk wrote:

I have been using Eloquence since I migrated from Window-eyes to Jaws. Eloquence guided me through the download and installation on one my computers while I used the check for updates on the other computer. Narrator was not needed. I am with Mike regarding the fact that the self voicing feature has been removed. So what? -----Original Message-----

Most folks expect that an update to a program can be handled by the program itself. It may have been aanounced somewhere or in some way, but probably, if it was even mentioned somewhere, few, if any users or new customers, would have been aware. And it adds an extra layer of inconvenience for an average user who, quite obviously, most are not exactly computer sophisticated. |

Those are good points. An audio clip could have been played at the beginning of the installer when no screen reader is detected telling the user that the installer's self voiced capability has been removed. For me though, the first thing I do when I get notified of an update is to go to Freedom Scientific's web site, then go to the what's new in JAWS page to see what enhancements or fixes are in the new update, then after I've read that, I continue with the update. So I do not believe that Freedom Scientific ever bothered to tell anybody that the installer is no longer self voiced.

Even though I use the semi automatic update, I always go to the Freedom Scientific web site and download the full offline installer just in case I need to do a repair.

Yeah, unless I missed it, I don't think that they ever announced the change, it could have avoided the confusion or mistaking it for a technical issue.

No controversy, in the past the JAWS installer was self voiced, it did not need a screen reader running to have a voice.

Hmmm... I guess that's kind of in line with them dropping support for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1, which all had very anemic version of Narrator.
