moderated epub books and what to use to read them
Jeff Lukacsena <jlukacsena@...>
Hello Everyone, I will be attending graduate school this fall. The access technology center mentioned that some of my books might be available in Epub. I have never used ePub books before. Can someone point me to the best places to find, and learn how to read these kinds of books. Thanks, Jeff Lukacsena

QRead will still read epub but I don’t know when it will stop working on the latest windows. It works using windows 10.

I won't use any of those Q programs, he charges for them, then doesn't give you any technical support when there are problems. So I obviously don't recommend that you use them.

I’ve seen on different mailing lists that some people use a piece of free software called bookworm, but I couldn’t tell the official website to download it.

It does, when I had an iPhone I'd get the iOS access for all book in epub format and put it on my Victor Reader.

It just works great. Yes, he charges for it, and I am willing to pay money for quality software to be independent. That was sure an unnecessarily tart response. I'm happy you don't need tech support, but that's no reason to throw scorn and ridicule on those that do.

It will handle books with 2000 pages or more very very nicely.

You can now do this with Kindle as well.

Hi all,
Voicedream Reader on the iPhone does a good job of navigating ePub files marked up with headings. David |

Just be aware that if the ePub book in question has digital protection also known as digital rights management, Voice Dream Reader will not be able to access it. Otherwise Voice Dream is my app of choice for reading ePub content. Alan Lemly On Jul 30, 2022, at 9:26 AM, David Kingsbury <davidkingsbury77@...> wrote:

I just use the Caliber command line tool to convert .epubs to text files to dump onto my old braille display. It will work with anything and also convert to just about any format you can think of. Otherwise, Qread will read them on pC, but I don’t use it for much nowadays. There’s also an MS word etension that will do the trick. Web-based extensions too but I haven’t had much luck with those and getting the text to actually read with a screen-reader.

Can this Caliber tool remove DRM from some ebooks like Kindle?

In a word, not on its own, but you can install a plugin to do this. Probably not a good topic for the list, but: https://www.techradar.com/news/software/how-to-remove-ebook-drm-with-calibre-1291960 I have not had great experiences with Calibre main programme and jAWS, but there is an add-on for nVDA. The conversion can be done from the command line, but I'm not sure about importing the plugin. There might be a way. I'll see if I can find anything int eh documentation.

I use QRead too sometimes, but I don't think it's all that good. Mostly thought aht's because I want to read books on my braille display, and there just aren't any encoding options for file conversion. I don’t' think the developer is updating it anymore. But there's no particular reason to create a version specifically for Windows 11, is there? Windows software is usually compatible across operating systems, with very few exceptions, and these are mostly because of technology like DirectX. I'm still using software here that I used on Windows XP with no problems,a nd that's how Windows is designed to work.

Thanks but you don't need to do that unless you are curious for your own reasons. I'll look at the documentation myself. I don't mind as I am one of those people who actually likes to read the instructions.

Not enough people do. Not ragging on anyone but I swear the traffic on these sortso f lists would be cut in at least half if people actually read docs. Though of course, the quality fo documentation does vary. BTW I spelled "calibre" wrong in my initial post -- it's "r e " at the end and not "e r".
