I bank with Chase and they are quite accessible except for some parts of their iOS app.
Aira has free access with TD Bank, whether that means they're accessible or not I can't say.
And I've had some people say that Capitol One is accessible though like TD Bank I have no experience with them to know for sure.

The one part of their app that I had constant trouble with until I simply gave up on it was the deposit checks feature. You have to take pictures of the front and back of the check. The auto mode is way to short for a blind person to use and the manual method is difficult too. The problem is that the app gives you no guidance for getting the entire check in the picture and if you are too far away they won't accept the picture saying that they can't read the check.

So I just endorse the checks, mail them to Chase's deposits by mail address with a blank deposit slip.

I will not go anywhere near BoA, of all the banks I've used, I had more problems with fraudulent charges showing up in my account than with any other banks. They're not as secure as they'd like you to think they are.

I have had a B of A Master card for years and have had trouble only once. They notified me by E mail that there were some suspicious charges made to my card and if the charges were not made by me to notify them. They were not made by me so I called them and they were deleted from my account. Tom

Lucky you! In the year I used them I had to get a new card four times and I am very careful with my card. I never actually chose BoA, three or four months after I switched to a new bank, they just happened to acquire that bank.

Well, yes, as that's how any mobile banking app gets the data necessary to deposit the check and to have the legally required images (when the bank processes the checks normally they're scanned, and images are saved).

When it comes to things like this, it's always easier to enlist sighted assistance, once, to get a "photo rig" set up for your smartphone.  I've done this on multiple occasions, and not just for banking apps, so that the phone can be placed on top of the rig (which is usually a small cardboard box, cut into what amounts to a small table with an opening large enough for the smartphone's camera to be able to take photos of items placed "on the floor" (table top or desk top in reality) beneath the rig.  Once set up this tends to work like a charm for as long as the rig remains viable.

Also, to add to what Brian mentioned, with sighted assistance in getting a usable picture of something, if you have an iPhone, you can face time a trusted contact and they can take a picture with your phone's rear camera, and they will have it on their phone, and they can then eMail it to you.
I have done this with my son.
There's probably a way to do this in Android, but I haven't done anything using the camera except be my eyes, and I don't think they have the ability to take a picture, and if they could, I don't think you would want a stranger taking pictures of such things.

Except the Chase app won't let you use an already taken picture, it has to be taken with the app and you can't do that with face time. I had several document scanners that would tell you if it couldn't see an edge, I simply think that if they were serious about accessibility, they would have their app do the same thing.

And regarding BoA, the other reason why I didn't like them is when all the other banks were offering PC banking (banking with financial management software like Quicken or Microsoft Money) at no charge, BoA charged $10 a month for it.

I don't know of a single mobile check deposit app that doesn't require the photo to be taken inside the app.  Banking apps value certain aspects of security that other apps do not because they don't have to.  They want tight control over image source.

Apps that do edge detection generally are working with fixed cameras, that is, the camera itself cannot move when working with the thing being imaged.  That makes it quite easy, relatively speaking, to do edge detection.  By contrast, phones are handheld and subject to quite a bit of movement, which makes edge detection very difficult if you can't, literally, see what's in the image and stabilize the camera at the same time.

The use of a homemade rig essentially sets up precisely the same thing as a fixed camera and, provided you know where to place the check (or anything else, really, though dedicated rigs come into play based on the page size) you can get a consistent result pretty much each and every time.

Maybe so but I had a couple of document scanners on my phone that did edge detection quite well despite the camera being handheld. You do know it is possible to hold still so the camera gets a steady image unless you have some kind of mobility issue.

Of course I do.  But what you are not accounting for is that you generally have to be able to see the target to be able to do this with any ease with a handheld camera.  And I can tell you that even as someone who sees, this can still be finicky.

To me, accessibility is about coming up with a way that works to get the desired result, and does so consistently.  Very often that means using compensatory strategies.

Things that rely on vision as a primary part of using them, and handheld cameras of any sort fall into this category, are going to prove challenging for those who have significant visual impairment or are blind.  It's never going to be even close in ease of use as it is for someone who has the sensory modality around which something is designed.  The same is true with regard to any technology that is primarily focused on a given sense and where that sense is significantly impaired or absent for a given individual.  And all accessibility, if any is even possible (you can't make the profoundly deaf hear no matter what), is a workaround that is absent much of the information contained in the sensory modality being "worked around."  At best you have some sort of rough to very, very rough approximation.

To me accessibility means that I can use it without needing sighted assistance.

I scanned documents all the time with my phone's camera without a problem because the scanning app would tell me if it couldn't see an edge and I didn't need to create some kind of holder for my phone or the document, nor did I need sighted assistance to set it up.

So why do you insist that I have to make a holder for my phone or that I need sighted help?

I didn't insist that YOU do anything.  All advice I offer, whether to you or anyone else, is take it if you like it or leave it if you don't.

I made a suggestion, and one I know that can work.  If it's not to your liking then pursue something else or just continue complaining.

Different situations call for different actions.  I can't, and won't, attempt to force anyone to do anything they do not wish to do.  But I will offer options they may or may not like or accept.
