Moderated getting jaws to pronounce the euros symbol.
Patrick Murphy
hi,
can anyone help me with this? i know, that the shortcut key in windows for the euros symbol is ctrl-alt-e. however, when i press this shortcut, jaws says "e ecute". i know this sounds funny, but it is saying the letter "e" with some sort of symbol after it, like a french accent or something like that. i was able to get it to say "euros sign" before with this combination. i have searched the settings center up and down, and i cannot find anything. please, please, please help me before i go insane!!! i am using jaws 2021 latest version. it is not related to any particular program, it happens for everything. regards and thanks, patrick |

The problem here is that CTRL + ALT + E is not a Windows shortcut for the Euro symbol, but it is a shortcut for same in MS-Word (or, more accurately, in Office programs).
If you need to use the Euro symbol very frequently and you don't have a keyboard with native support for the symbol, it makes sense to use a key remapping utility like Microsoft PowerToys (it's one among the PowerToys) or SharpKeys to remap some seldom used or never used key to the Euro Symbol. It's also possible to generate it using ALT + [Number pad digits] 0128, but for a screen reader user that means quickly toggling on Num Lock for the number pad which is not only a PITA, but will almost certainly lead to a mess at some point when it isn't toggled back off again and you start issuing typical screen reader commands using the number pad in non-number mode. -- Brian - Windows 10, 64-Bit, Version 21H2, Build 19044 Here is a test to find out whether your mission in life is complete. Absolutely, assuming the symbol is in the list. It happens that "Euros" is. As Soronel says, press JAWS key+4 above the letters, then repeatedly the letter "e" until Euros is verbalized.

Windows shortcut should be (US-English keyboard layout) Right CTRL+left ALT+e Only right CTRL and Left alt, no other combinations. That works here at least. Artur -----Original Message-----

I haven't played with Keyboard Manager in PowerToys for ages, but it has vastly improved and allows you to either globally remap a key if you have need for something like the Euro symbol on a constant basis and never use, say, the tilde. It also allows you to remap keys only when you're using a given application.
One word of warning is that this particular latest version of PowerToys is glacially slow to install, but is snappy to use when it's running. -- Brian - Windows 10, 64-Bit, Version 21H2, Build 19044 Here is a test to find out whether your mission in life is complete. If you’re alive, it isn’t. |

It will not work in Notepad, a web browser edit field, or any program that is not a part of the Microsoft Office suite of programs. This is documented by Microsoft. It this is working outside of Office then some sort of key remapping has already been performed and there are multiple ways to potentially achieve such a remapping. -- Brian - Windows 10, 64-Bit, Version 21H2, Build 19044 Here is a test to find out whether your mission in life is complete. Hi,
I tried it in notepad and it worked. no key remapping is done here. In fact it does not depends on Windows, it depends on keyboard layout. For example there are 2 different key combinations for euro sign in Estonian keyboard layout. It seems that one of them works in US-English keyboard layout too.

Hi Patrick/all, Unfortunately I do not know why, but in my case, writing from Greece=eurozone, jaws always says euro when I use this combination. Hope someone understands and can be of greater help. Cheers, Takis

hi,
i found a way around it. here it is. insert+j to get to the jaws menu. expand utilities. go to the dictionary manager. ctrl+shift+d to open the default. select add. in the first box press ctrl+alt+e. in the second box press ctrl+alt+4 (in my case this also generates a euros symbol). then add it.
now, you can jump around with excitement!!! jaws will now say "euro sign" for everything, even if you press it on your desktop for no reason. it maps everywhere.
just to note, everything for my windows 10 (latest version with all updates) is set to ireland, date, time, keyboard etc. i am from ireland, so this makes perfect sense. however, i have found out from time to time, that freedom scientific seems to forget that irish people exist, when it comes to jaws.
anyway, thanks to you all. i hope this helps someone else.
regards and thanks,
patrick

Takis, did you see Soronel’s JAWS key+4 suggestion? This key combo brings up a list of symbols. It isn’t exhaustive, but it does include the euro. As Soronel suggests, once the list is opened, press f to go to the first item after the euro, then up-arrow once to euro. (I realize I’m assuming the same options appear in your version, which may not be the case.)

Hi Adrian/all, My congratulations for having your novel published Adrian, this is good. I have always maintained a dream of writing a something either a silly novel, or something on the middle ages onboard a steamer cruising the seas and ports of the world, with me maintaining a luxury cabin where I could work, spending my time with writing, visiting places, eating bestially and being entertained in the company of pleasant ladies

Actually it has been within office that I have used the symbol, I use left cntrl-alt-e, or same combination with epsilon when on a Greek keyboard, but perhaps this is because I have a laptop keyboard in jaws? However, I am almost always using an office program when I need to use that symbol, so there may be a point, although I think I have produced the same effect outside office once. That’s why I said to Patrick that it seems that I am always getting the euro symbol without having done anything particular. Cheers to all, Takis Takis, did you see Soronel’s JAWS key+4 suggestion?
