Hello everyone:
I need to set up port forwarding for a particular
purpose. My ISP provider, is EE. The router's interface is mostly
accessible. I was able to choose the device from the list, enter the start and
end port forwarding addresses but, I could not find the button to press, which
saves the new settings. I called EE and explained my problem. EE sent a
technician to my home to try and help me set up the port forwarding function,
which is when we discovered there were a couple of buttons on the port
forwarding page which had been designed as graphics, which of course,no screen
reader cannot speak.
Now, I am looking for a router, which has an
interface, which is accessible using JAWS. Until 2014, when Annie and I moved to
the UK, we always had Lynksys routers. Are the modern day Lynksys routers fully
accessible using JAWS, if not, can any list members recommend a router,
which is accessible, using JAWS.
Any suggestions, must contain both make and model
numbers.
Thank you in anticipation for any and all
suggestions.

Hi Dave,
I use a Linksys Smart router, but I don't use any
Linksys software, I use the web interface, and I find that Internet Explorer
works better than the three main browsers for router interface.

Also, just as a note, you can label graphics so that screen readers speak whatever text you assign and then even graphics buttons are usable. The trick here is making sure you get the labels right.

On this point, I would add that unless someone has
just gotten a router, then our suggestions may not be very useful.
My Linksys smart router is possibly 5 years old,
and you can't likely get that model any more.
I don't think any router manufacturer pays any
attention to accessibility, I think that if one model happens to be accessible,
it is a fluke.

Agreed with this, hardware of this type changes on an extremely rapid basis. (Mostly, I suspect, so that they can always put "newer and better" on the box).

Do the graphic buttons show up in JAWS as graphics? If so you could use the graphics labeler in JAWS to give them labels. You would need sighted help to do this but once it is done, you wouldn't need the help again.
I use Charter/Spectrum for my cable TV and internet and they use a router that I find quite accessible. At least I've been able to do everything I needed to do with it. It announces itself as a Sagemcom F@st5260 router.

Soronel:
Because the buttons which are used in the EE Router's web interface are designed using foreground and background pixels, JAWS will not know they are there at all. In other words, these buttons, are not unlabeled graphics of the type JAWS recognize and tell me there is an unlabeled graphic.

Hello Dave, The most accessible routers I have found are from MikroTik using the command line to access their RouterOS UI but it is a steep learning curving as it isn’t intuitive. I called EE and explained my problem. EE sent a technician to my home to try and help me set up the port forwarding function, which is when we discovered there were a couple of buttons on the port forwarding page which had been designed as graphics, which of course,no screen reader cannot speak. Now, I am looking for a router, which has an interface, which is accessible using JAWS. Until 2014, when Annie and I moved to the UK, we always had Lynksys routers. Are the modern day Lynksys routers fully accessible using JAWS, if not, can any list members recommend a router, which is accessible, using JAWS. Any suggestions, must contain both make and model numbers. Thank you in anticipation for any and all suggestions. Dave Durberr

The only problem with using a discontinued router would be the lack of security updates.

Even if the router isn't being sold any more, I'll bet you can find one on eBay.

Hi Dave, I use a Linksys Smart router, but I don't use any Linksys software, I use the web interface, and I find that Internet Explorer works better than the three main browsers for router interface. Hello everyone: I need to set up port forwarding for a particular purpose. My ISP provider, is EE. The router's interface is mostly accessible. I was able to choose the device from the list, enter the start and end port forwarding addresses but, I could not find the button to press, which saves the new settings. Hi Dave, We have that same issue with the router that came with Spectrum. The tech who came out suggested the Asus router that they list will work on their website with their equipment. You might want to find out which routers work with their equipment and then find out which one is accessible. Karen

Do you happen to know if the router you have is
still available? If it is, what is the model number?
