Moderated Function keys and trying to change the way they operate with JAWS

Karen Reynolds

Hi Bill,
Thanks. I've been holding the function key and then pressing the f key I want to use.

Hi, Karen. Yes, hold down the FN key, and while held down, press ESCAPE.

Does the function key and the escape have to be pressed at the same time to toggle it on and off? I use escape all the time and it doesn't do this.

Hi,
If a Lenovo the "FN" key and "ESC" key will toggle this setting off or on. Drove me crazy for a bit when I first got my Lenovo. Other models have similar means however some are more complicated.

Hello. So I got a new computer with Windows 11, so I have been trying to figure out the layout of the new laptop and all of that. And I’ve noticed that when I’m on a webpage and I want to hit insert plus F7 to go to a links list, it doesn’t work, same with insert plus F4 to unload JAWS (Not that I would ever actually want to do that, but I was just trying to mess around with it). It’s like my function keys aren’t working in the way that I need them to. Like for example, I believe it is my F5 key that functions as a mute button right now, but I don’t want that, I want them to just function as regular F one through F 12 keys. I posted on a Facebook group, and I was told to do the function key plus escape, and I’ve tried that and it still is the same way. Is JAWS supposed to say anything when I perform that action of function key plus escape? Usually I’m pretty tech savvy, but this not being able to do insert plus F7 for the links list is kind of baffling right now. I know I can use the Hey Sharky feature and have it pull up links that way, but still, I’d like to have the normal key command work. Thanks.

Hi Dan and all,
I know I asked about this as part of a different topic a couple of weeks ago but your suggestion made me curious. I have a Lenovo laptop and the f1-12 keys work normally but my insert key says insert on it but when I press it Jaws says "alt windows q,"; it's done this since I got this laptop a little over 2 years ago even before I switched my keyboard layout to laptop. The key to the left of my insert key doesn't work right either but since I don't know what the key is I'm not as worried about it working. I know that the caps lock key is my insert key but as I have an actual insert key it'd be really nice to be able to use it. I followed Glenn's instructions for changing it in the Jaws keyboard manager but that didn't work, any idea if this methoid would fix this issue? Sorry but I'm not brave enough to simply try something without knowing whether or not it'll work first.

Taylor:

If your new laptop is an HP, you will need to get someone with sight to change the setting in the BIOS.

Hello taylor,

On Lenovo laptops the fn and esc keys will toggle the function keys
between function keys and multimedia keys. On other laptops some require
the fn key and shift key to lock the function keys into function mode so
they will perform as function keys. On other laptops you have to go into
the bios and change the setting for how function keys perform. There
will either be a check box that has to be unchecked or a way of toggleing
between enabled or disabled and possibly a couple of other methods
depending on the laptop model and how the function keys are addressed in
the bios. This will require sighted assistance as the bios does not have
speech capabilities and the setting you are looking for is usually found
under the advanced options.

I hope this helps.

Kevin

Hi Taylor,
It sounds like somehow your function key has been permanently pressed. I'm not sure how to unpress it. I know that the keys you are describing is similar to what mine does when I press and hold down that key. On my laptop it is between the control and windows keys.

I got a sighted person to read what those keys do when I press the function key, then I wrote them in a list and which key they go with.

Karen

What laptop are you using? Some requires going into the bios and change the function key behaviour
