Moderated FS voice assist has access to my microphone and I don't want that

Kimber Gardner

Hello,

I recently started seeing a message that says the freedom scientific
voice assistant has access to my microphone. I didn't think too much
of it until my laptop responded randomly to ambient sound when I was
nowhere near the keyboard.

I can see in settings how to turn off all access to the mic, but there
are some apps I want to have access. Jaws is not one of them, but I
don't see a checkbox to disable it. Can someone help?

Thanks,
Kim

the microphone is waiting for commands to sharky. To turn it off,
On the JAWS screen, press alt-u for utilities. The first thing there is "voice assistant submenu".
Open the submenu and activate settings dot-dot-dot.
There is an item that says "enable voice assistant", checked." Uncheck it.

This will disable sharky's responding to the spoken command "hey sharky", but you can still use it with alt-insert-space.

Thanks, I appreciate the info. I feel like this "assistant" should be
turned off by default. It's intrusive.

Thanks again

If you are referring to Sharky, in the settings center there is a setting to disable Sharky.

Until I started installing JAWS with all external services disabled, it was one of the first things I would do.

Thanks, that’s good to know. I’m curious why an app like Jaws needs a voice assistant at all.

Voice assist is very common. Keeps JAWS current and also is a nice feature for some tasks being hands free or even quicker. Especially good for those who have medical or other issues that hinder typing.

Not sure how it is intrusive as JAWS indicates that your microphone is being used. Since many use laptops , tablets and even desktops with microphones default is good to be on although I agree it may be annoying if not needed.

Hi, Kimber. Some people may only have the use of one hand. If this is the case, it may be difficult for them to use some of the awkward key combinations that some of the commands like,
Virtualize the screen, ALT plus JAWS Key plus W
use. This makes it "handy" no pun intended, for them to use Voice Assistant to invoke some of these commands. I do agree with you, though, that Voice Assistant should be turned off by default. It can interfere with other uses of the microphone, such as when using Zoom.

Hi, Dan. The intrusiveness occurs if one is trying to record something else and Voice Assistant keeps intruding into the recording. That is intrusive.

I need to correct myself here. Apparently in the last JAWS update, Freedom Scientific decided to remove the option to disable Sharky. So if you want to disable it, you'll have to create an AdditionalSettings.ini file and put it in the same folder where you run the JAWS installer from.

To get information about how to do this run the installer with the /help command line option.

Remember, if push comes to shove and you want to block microphone access there is a very easy way under Windows 10 or 11.

Open Settings, type microphone in the search box, then open the item returned for Choose which apps can access your microphone.  Then look for the section Allow desktop apps to access your microphone (since JAWS is a desktop app, it will be under there).

There is an actual .exe file, I always download the off line installer. You can get them here:

Be warned, they are big because they have all the languages JAWS supports in them.

Thanks! Either my memory is faulty, it might me, or they moved it because I could have sworn that the 'Enable voice assist' option was in the user section of the settings center.

Hi, Gene. This is not true. I am running the latest JAWS update. If I go into JAWS>Utilities>Voice Assistant>Settings, the first check box there is, Enable Voice Assistant. I have it unchecked. It has not been removed.

I need to correct myself here. Apparently in the last JAWS update,
Freedom Scientific decided to remove the option to disable Sharky. So
if you want to disable it, you'll have to create an
AdditionalSettings.ini file and put it in the same folder where you run the JAWS installer from.

To get information about how to do this run the installer with the
/help command line option.

Until I started installing JAWS with all external services disabled,
it was one of the first things I would do.

Hello,

I recently started seeing a message that says the freedom scientific
voice assistant has access to my microphone. I didn't think too much
of it until my laptop responded randomly to ambient sound when I was
nowhere near the keyboard.

I can see in settings how to turn off all access to the mic, but
there are some apps I want to have access. Jaws is not one of them,
but I don't see a checkbox to disable it. Can someone help?

Thanks,
Kim

I used this at the run line, with the /DisableExternalServices switch, but how can I tell if it did it?
J2022.2206.9.400-Offline-x64.exe /DisableExternalServices

Thanks,

There is an actual .exe file, I always download the off line installer.
You can get them here:

https://support.freedomscientific.com/Downloads/OfflineInstallers#jaws

Be warned, they are big because they have all the languages JAWS supports in them.

When people on this thread talk about running the installer, are you
referring to the file That we download for latest versions, or is there an actual "installerPackage.exe" file?
To disable services, we run
C:\\InstallerPackage.exe /DisableExternalServices From the run line.
Is there a file named InstallerPackage.exe?
And on that string, the path is C:\\
What directory will it look in?

Hi, Gene. They moved it. It used to be in JAWS Settings Center between Voice Aliases and Window Classes. That was in JAWS 2021.
