Moderated File renamers

Hi everyone!

I think I saw someone else ask this but didn't see an answer. Does anyone know of an easy to use and accessible file renaming utility? There was one a while back that I looked at that I think was called "File Renamer" but its main window or dialog had a crap load of fields, some of which weren't very well labeled that tried to throw the kitchen sink at you. That was way to much!

Thanks!
Gene...

I saw this sometime last week and the program is call "copy file name and the version number was something like 3.5

Do a search for it, it was free and give you a lot of features that I'm sure you will like.

Hi Milton!

I did the search and the only thing I found was an File Explorer extension that made copying file names and paths easier than it currently is with just Windows.

That's not what I'm looking for, I am looking for something that can rename a bunch of files while doing various operations on the file name, like ending it with a number and incrementing the number as it renames the collection of files.

Renaming files within Windows is fairly very simple. Why do you need an app to do this?

Hi Rick!

I agree that renaming individual files is easy, but when you have a large number of files you want named using a specific pattern, or you need to remove certain characters from a bunch of file names, a bulk renaming utility is much easier than renaming all those file one at a time, that would get really tedious real fast.

Hi,

I do understand what you are wanting to do. My concern is a TTS user Friendly program that may not even be able to do as you wish and if something is out there, to what degree is or will it be accessible with TTS, the time to learn, make adjustments etc. May be much more time efficient to just go through your files and knock it out as you go...

Hi Gene,

It depends a bit on what the pattern of filenames you want, but would the DOS rename command in a command prompt window do what you want?

I’ve used that if I want file names to have a common stem but but go up in number sequentially.

Cheers,

Ed

Hi Gene,

It can as long as you’re happy for the numbers to increase by one only.

I used it when I was consolidating Audio book files ripped from CD’S I’d bought when I wanted them all in one folder per book instead of one folder per CD.

Cheers,

Ed

That's not what I'm looking for, I am looking for something that can
rename a bunch of files while doing various operations on the file
name, like ending it with a number and incrementing the number as it
renames the collection of files.

Do a search for it, it was free and give you a lot of features that
I'm sure you will like.

Hi everyone!

I think I saw someone else ask this but didn't see an answer. Does
anyone know of an easy to use and accessible file renaming utility?
There was one a while back that I looked at that I think was called
"File Renamer" but its main window or dialog had a crap load of
fields, some of which weren't very well labeled that tried to throw
the kitchen sink at you. That was way to much!

Thanks!

Hi Gene,
Try a web search for:
fast file renamer

It's free and works quite well for me.

Rick

Hi Richard!

Do you perhaps have the documentation file? The download I found for Fast File Renamer says that the documentation isn't included in the zip file with the program.

Thanks!

Hi Gene,
All the documentation you really need is in this zip including some notes
that I made.
They did have a manual but it was written in a program called TreePad and
not what I'd call totally accessible.

Hi Richard!

Thank you very much!

I could add files. I figured out what the three tabs were. I figured out to some degree how the two edit fields worked. And I could run and undo simulations. But I could not figure how to actually get the rename process to run to rename the files.

The problem seemed to be that JAWS could not reliably tell where one menu ended and the next menu started, so I often got things like "FileEdit", or "ViewAction", and so on, the same thing happened within each drop down menu. I did figure out that to view the file list I needed to set MSAA mode to classic.

Hi Richard!

Thanks for all your help but for whatever reason FFR does not work for me. I can do everything except the actual rename. The rename appears to run but it always returns the message that zero files were renamed.

Do you have the original documentation file? I would like to try getting into it to see if there is something I am missing that is preventing FFR from working.

Hi Gene,
The original documentation files that came with the program are in the zip,
but I have included the manual that I spoke of the other day.
If you kept my original message use the link, and re-download the zip, and
you will find the manual inside.
Like I said in my original message the manual didn't seem to be that
accessible, but you might have better luck than me.
HTH,
Rick
