Generally it is not recommended for you to downgrade back from an original windows 11 to windows 10. Windows 11 is quite stable now, a year into its launched. Perhaps you can describe what didn't work well on Windows 11.

Hi Annabelle!
You woun't hear that from me! I've been the computer industry since 1980 and I have always felt that automatic updates are a very bad idea. The problem with automatic updates is that you may get an update that does bad thing to your computer, and while you might be able remove the update, the automatic update feature will just put it back again. It is always better to wait a while to see what others are saying about an update and if the news isn't good, you just don't install it!

I purchased my SMA with a college trust fund back in 2002, as I was going to school back then. The SMA was a "Professional" license. I want to try to change my recent home annual license to a perpetual license, but I'm not sure how much it would cost to upgrade from one license to another. Am I right when I hear that a perpetual license never expires?

Hey there Meow Meow! Your name makes me smile! To turn off automatic updates in new versions of Windows like Windows 10, which doesn't seem to have that parameter in the Control Panel like other previous versions (That really makes me mad), you actually have to create a registry key. If it's not already there, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion. create a new key called "WindowsUpdate". within that key, create another key called AU. Within that key, create a Dword value called NoAutoUpdate. Set that value to 1. If you have Winaero Tweaker, which also helps, set the parameter of Disable Windows Update to checked, and you should be good to go. It does sound complicated, but it's definitely worth it if you don't wanna be bothered with constant updates!

Hi, Molly. You are right, that it is easier to buy the Annual Licence than to update an expired SMA. The difference is that, even if your SMA expires, your current version of JAWS will keep working indefinitely. The Annual Licence, on the other hand, will go into 40-minute mode, the month in which your Annual Licence expires.

Hi Glenn!
No,, Microsoft took that away from us. You have to get a professional edition of Windows to have any control over which updates you get.
You would think that a software company like Microsoft would know how bad an idea automatic updates are.

Yes, turning off automatic updates is a good thing. I don't know if windows 10 or that newer one, LOL, allow one to select which updates can be installed through windows update, like we can in earlier windows. Glenn

I have an Annual license for JAWS 2021, and I'd like to change it to a perpetual license. Those are the ones that don't expire, right? Will it cost me anything? If so, how much. Specifically, I have a home license for JAWS 2021.

That would be a very old version and you do own the
license, but that version would not work with Windows 10 or 11. OAS's keep
changing so you need to upgrade your screen reader.

Type to Another: Additional Costs?
I
originally purchased JAWS with my college trust fund in 2002. Does this mean I
own it if I purchased a perpetual license back then?
There is so much
confusion about this issue that I will try to explain the differences
between a perpetual license and an annual renewable home license. When
you purchase a copy of JAWS for the regular price of $950, you can use it
indefinitely without restriction as long as it is still compatible with your
version of Windows because you own it outright. It is yours to keep,
and you can authorize it to use on up to three computers. Many JAWS
home users have JAWS purchased for them by a blindness rehab agency and
never bother to upgrade their SMA's at their own cost because JAWS works
satisfactorally with the version of Windows they are using. Other JAWS
users who own it outright because they either purchased it themselves or had
it purchased for them by a rehab agency prefer to pay $150 every two years
to upgrade their SMA's so that they can enjoy the latest version of JAWS and
ensure ongoing compatibility with Windows. With an annual home
license,on the other hand, you are only purchasing the right to use JAWS
without restriction for a specific period of time, usually one, three or
five years. Unlike an SMA, you do not own JAWS outright, and if you
fail to renew your license before it is due to expire, JAWS will revert to
40 minute demo mode. HTH.

Thank you,

you opt for a 2 or 5 year licence, it would come in even cheaper from
a overall pricing standpoint. That's my understanding of it all.

I originally purchased an SMA when I originally purchased JAWS,
starting with version 3.7.

Yes, but only that version, you don't own updated versions of JAWS, only the version you purchased back in 2002.~
