Moderated Changing From One License Type to Another: Additional Costs?

Annabelle Susan Morison

Hi, it's Annabelle.
I have an Annual license for JAWS 2021, and I'd like to change it to a perpetual license. Those are the ones that don't expire, right? Will it cost me anything? If so, how much. Specifically, I have a home license for JAWS 2021.

Gerald Levy

Sorry, no can do.  Once you have selected the annual license option, you cannot switch to the SMA option without purchasing JAWS outright for $950, if you have not previously done so.

I originally purchased an SMA when I originally purchased JAWS, starting with version 3.7.

Depending on your last SMA version, you could upgrade to a current SMA by paying the upgrade cost from that previous version. But if it is not a recent version the price may be more than you want to pay.

The most recent version my SMA currently supports is JAWS version 15.

Thank you,

bharat. In that case, you would be better served by going with the
$95 JAWS home annual licence from FS's E-Store. While out there, if
you opt for a 2 or 5 year licence, it would come in even cheaper from
a overall pricing standpoint. That's my understanding of it all.

Oh my goodness, you are so far behind with JAWS that FS would probably charge you at least $500 to bring your SMA up to date.  I presume you are using JAWS 15 with Windows 7 because such an old version of JAWS is not compatible with Windows 10 or 11.  Therefore, if you are planning to buy a new computer with Windows 10 or 11 and update toJAWS 2022, your best bet by far is to stick with the annual license option.  It will only cost you $95 for a one year license, which is only $20 more than the one year cost of a two year SMA whose regular price is$150.

Hi Annabelle,

Your situation seems a bit complicated, so I think the best thing for you to do is to call Vispero on Tuesday and talk it over with customer service.

Good Luck!

You will have to pay $95 to renew your annual home license for another year.  If you purchased your license inMay of 2021, it may have already expired if it was only a one-year license, and JAWS may only work in 40 minute demo mode.  FS also offers 3 year and 5 year licenses which are currently avaiable at 20% discounts, as announced yesterday at the ACB convention.  I suggest you call FS on Tuesday at 800-444-4443 for more infornation.

There is so much confusion about this issue that I will try to explain the differences between a perpetual license and an annual renewable home license.  When you purchase a copy of JAWS for the regular price of $950, you can use it indefinitely without restriction as long as it is still compatible with your version of Windows because you own it outright.  It is yours to keep, and you can authorize it to use on up to three computers.  Many JAWS home users have JAWS purchased for them by a blindness rehab agency and never bother to upgrade their SMA's at their own cost because JAWS works satisfactorally with the version of Windows they are using.  Other JAWS users who own it outright because they either purchased it themselves or had it purchased for them by a rehab agency prefer to pay $150 every two years to upgrade their SMA's so that they can enjoy the latest version of JAWS and ensure ongoing compatibility with Windows.  With an annual home license,on the other hand, you are only purchasing the right to use JAWS without restriction for a specific period of time, usually one, three or five years.  Unlike an SMA, you do not own JAWS outright, and if you fail to renew your license before it is due to expire, JAWS will revert to 40 minute demo mode.  HTH.

Yes, when you purchased JAWS in 2002, you essentially purchased a perpetual license because you own it outright and can use it indefinitely without restriction as long as it is still compatible with the version of Windows on your computer. But in order to keep JAWS up to date, you would have had to purchase an SMA every two years until the present time. If you let your SMA lapse at some point in the past, FS will charge you a hefty penalty to bring it up to date.

Yes, but only that version, you don't own updated versions of JAWS, only the version you purchased back in 2002.~

I originally purchased JAWS with my college trust fund in 2002. Does this mean I own it if I purchased a perpetual license back then?

HTH.

That would be a very old version and you do own the license, but that version would not work with Windows 10 or 11. OAS's keep changing so you need to upgrade your screen reader.

I used to have an SMA for Jaws, not sure which version of Jaws it was.
My SMA had expired, and rather than renewing the SMA I purchased the
home annual yearly subscription for around $95. In my opinion it's
easier than trying to renew an expired SMA.

I purchased my SMA with a college trust fund back in 2002, as I was going to school back then. The SMA was a "Professional" license. I want to try to change my recent home annual license to a perpetual license, but I'm not sure how much it would cost to upgrade from one license to another. Am I right when I hear that a perpetual license never expires?

Yes it is easy, however if you didn't renew it come the expiry date, your JAWS will be back to 40 minute demo mode.

I have a SMA for a professional license, since I use it for work and home. I'm not sure FS even offers a SMA for home licenses anymore, but don't hold me to that.

As I understand it, JAWS is mine to keep, even if I don't renew the SMA, but eventually the software won't work as Windows and applications keep progressing. Like you, I like the idea of owning my copy, even if it becomes outdated if I don't renew the SMA. The annual license is great for removing the barrier of entry for new JAWS users, but feels like a fleeting thing that you lose if you cannot afford the annual license one year.

If your last SMA was 2002, you may not be able to switch base to even a professional SMA at this point. You are probably best to call FS Sales and ask about your situation.

Robin
