Your explanation makes perfect sense!
Also, keeping the SMA's gives you greater flexibility as JAWS will continue working for you on a version of Windows it no longer supports.
One doesn't always make decisions strictly on what is the cheapest; often, decisions are based on what works best for a given person. You are using smart thinking giving yourself the greatest flexibility possible. And, if you have no financial issues with that, why not sas you keep more options open to yourself.

As far as I know, the ability to activate on three computers isn't contingent on only using one of those computers at a time. I believe it's done because a lot of people have a computer at home, one at work, and a laptop. In my last job developing a popular DRM system, we did the exact thing with our license.

I was able to renew my SMA for the $120 plus the state sales tax, and I also opted to get the Home Annual license for three years for the $228 plus the sales tax since I have more than one computer. I spoke with Kathleen at FS, and she went out of her way to be very helpful, even during this convention week when the FS folks were really busy and working extra hours. I did ask about the $210/$168 for the SMA, and while she did believe me when I told her what pricing the website showed, she wasn’t sure why it was showing those prices. I also asked if the reduced prices on the three and five year JAWS Home Annual licenses were the regular prices as the website indicated or convention specials, and she confirmed those were the convention prices. I had to get a different serial number for the three year license than I had for the one year one. However, since my license for the Home Annual one year didn’t expire until the end of August, Kathleen very nicely disabled that license as of now and added those days onto my new three year license so I wouldn’t lose those 57 days with the change in license term. Kathleen also offered to send me an email with my serial number and authorization code for the SMA renewal I purchased. And seeing as I only had that original CD or DVD or whatever where the braille was pretty much becoming unreadable, I was happy to take her up on that offer. In fact, since I was waiting until the conventions to decide which type of license to renew, I hadn’t yet purchased the 2023 and 2024 SMA and so also got the $210 price when I put in my serial number, but then I got the lower $168 price, actually $178 something with sales tax, after going to the checkout page. Also, when I checked the JAWS Home Annual license page, it did show me the lower price from the $95 for each year, but then it said that lower price was the regular price. Thus, I’m kind of wondering two things, so maybe I’ll be in line to call FS on Tuesday as well. First, regarding the SMA, is the $120 price only for those folks who renewed their SMA in what FS considers a timely manor, or is it for anyone who is currently running a 2022 license of JAWS? And second, regarding the discount for the three and five year Home Annual licenses, is this a discount for the conventions only, or is it now the normal discount for purchasing so many years at one time? Finally, and I hope this will make sense, below I’ll copy and paste what I got when checking my serial number on the upgrade page, what I saw when bringing up the checkout page for the SMA, and finally what is shown on the store page regarding the three year Home Annual license: Congratulations! Hi Vicky!
Curiosity question here. Since you are allowed to activate JAWS on up to three computers with just one license, is there a reason why you couldn't just do that with the other computer instead of buying a separate license for it?

I don't understand why you need a SMA and the
Annual Home license when you can run JAWS SMA on three computers.

Subject: Re: Convention Discounts On JAWS
Annual License
Just to respond back to this long thread to confirm that I
did indeed call FS today, and I couldn’t be happier as I certainly got more
than I expected from the call. I was able to renew my SMA for the $120 plus
the state sales tax, and I also opted to get the Home Annual license for three
years for the $228 plus the sales tax since I have more than one computer.
Â
I spoke with Kathleen at FS, and she went out of her way to
be very helpful, even during this convention week when the FS folks were
really busy and working extra hours. I did ask about the $210/$168 for the
SMA, and while she did believe me when I told her what pricing the website
showed, she wasn’t sure why it was showing those prices. I also asked if the
reduced prices on the three and five year JAWS Home Annual licenses were the
regular prices as the website indicated or convention specials, and she
confirmed those were the convention prices.
Â
I had to get a different serial number for the three year
license than I had for the one year one. However, since my license for the
Home Annual one year didn’t expire until the end of August, Kathleen very
nicely disabled that license as of now and added those days onto my new three
year license so I wouldn’t lose those 57 days with the change in license
term.
Â
Kathleen also offered to send me an email with my serial
number and authorization code for the SMA renewal I purchased. And seeing as I
only had that original CD or DVD or whatever where the braille was pretty much
becoming unreadable, I was happy to take her up on that offer. And just in
case I would happen to need it, she also sent me the same information for my
OpenBook software.
Â
Thus, I am very pleased with my purchase experience and
purchases and hope things also turn out well for the rest of you.

That’s what I got as well, even though the email from FS
reminding me of the renewal seemed to talk about links to all the
options. So to find the three and five year options, pick the shop online link
from the main FS website, then the software for home link, then the JAWS Home

and five year options after the description of the one year
license.

When I go to renew my Jaws Home license, I don’t get any
options for anything other than a one year renewal.
Â
What does one have to do to get the option for three or
five year license renewals?
Â
Kestrell
Â
Â
Actually, I’m almost thinking it might be a late charge for
not purchasing the SMA by the end of last year, as I recall that prices used
to go up for the SMA if one waited until after the end of the year when using
their last SMA count. In fact, since I was waiting until the conventions to
decide which type of license to renew, I hadn’t yet purchased the 2023 and
2024 SMA and so also got the $210 price when I put in my serial number, but
then I got the lower $168 price, actually $178 something with sales tax,Â
after going to the checkout page.
Â
Also, when I checked the JAWS Home Annual license page, it
did show me the lower price from the $95 for each year, but then it said that
lower price was the regular price.
Â
Thus, I’m kind of wondering two things, so maybe I’ll be in
line to call FS on Tuesday as well. First, regarding the SMA, is the $120
price only for those folks who renewed their SMA in what FS considers a timely
manor, or is it for anyone who is currently running a 2022 license of JAWS?
And second, regarding the discount for the three and five year Home Annual
licenses, is this a discount for the conventions only, or is it now the normal
discount for purchasing so many years at one time?
Â
Finally, and I hope this will make sense, below I’ll copy
and paste what I got when checking my serial number on the upgrade page, what
I saw when bringing up the checkout page for the SMA, and finally what is
shown on the store page regarding the three year Home Annual
license:

license price of
$950 for JAWS and have kept your SMAs up to ddate, then
SMAs are better
because they only cost $60 per year with the discount and
$75 per year
without the discount. But if you can't afford the initial
license price
of $950, then the annual license is better because it
doesn't require
that initial huge outlay of cash.

Just to respond back to this long thread to confirm that I did indeed call FS today, and I couldn’t be happier as I certainly got more than I expected from the call. And just in case I would happen to need it, she also sent me the same information for my OpenBook software.  Thus, I am very pleased with my purchase experience and purchases and hope things also turn out well for the rest of you.  Sent from Mail for Windows Â

So to find the three and five year options, pick the shop online link from the main FS website, then the software for home link, then the JAWS Home Annual  link, and then scroll down and you’ll find the link for the three and five year options after the description of the one year license.  Sent from Mail for Windows   When I go to renew my Jaws Home license, I don’t get any options for anything other than a one year renewal.  What does one have to do to get the option for three or five year license renewals?  Kestrell   Actually, I’m almost thinking it might be a late charge for not purchasing the SMA by the end of last year, as I recall that prices used to go up for the SMA if one waited until after the end of the year when using their last SMA count. Our records show that you are licensed for release 2022 of JAWS Single User and are eligible to renew your SMA for $210. When I go to renew my Jaws Home license, I don’t get any options for anything other than a one year renewal.  What does one have to do to get the option for three or five year license renewals?  Kestrell Â

From: main@jfw.groups.io <main@jfw.groups.io> On Behalf Of Vicky Collins Sent: Sunday, July 3, 2022 1:22 PM To: main@jfw.groups.io Subject: Re: Convention Discounts On JAWS Annual License  Actually, I’m almost thinking it might be a late charge for not purchasing the SMA by the end of last year, as I recall that prices used to go up for the SMA if one waited until after the end of the year when using their last SMA count. Our records show that you are licensed for release 2022 of JAWS Single User and are eligible to renew your SMA for $210. I haven't seen any discounts offered this convention season for Jaws. Generally, the most cost effective way to purchase a SMA is to renew for 2 years instead of 1 at the time of renewal. As I'm set through the 2024 upgrade, it shows me no prices when looking at the upgrade page.

In some countries, the price difference is substantial if you purchase from deeler versus direct purchase through FS Online store.

I had the same grumpiness with GW Micro when it provided meaningful competition until things changed. It was even kore odd with them, because they did not have a New Zealand dealership. Purchasing directly from FS would not dramatically alter the purchase price, because of currency conversions and credit card charges, but it is a principle. One of the strange things is of course that when you raise this with them, they place it back with the dealer, who then lodges it with Freedom Scientific. It's a great reason to switch to the JAWS Home Annual License, available for $95 per year.

The last time I asked, annual licence was restricted to the United States, but they will decide to make it available to deelers. Therefore you cannot buy it directly from FS, and have to follow your deelers pricing.
