Moderated Firefox 102 workaround, almost.

Chris Hill

I was having a problem with Firefox 102 and the application key not working, and I found one possible way around it.
If you turn on the use unified keyboard method in keyboard/general in settings center, the application key will work, unfortunately arrow keys don't work.  I could live with it if I could set this function to a hotkey, but I don't find it mentioned in the keyboard manager.

This made no difference for me, even tried rebooting jaws just to make
sure that wasn't somehow necessary.

This may seem obvious but...

Has anyone contacted Freedom Scientific about this, and if so, what was their response?

I'm aware of something new going on with accessibility in Firefox, and I figured with the holiday I might as well give it until early next week before contacting FS.  I'm tempted to go firefox beta hunting, though.

Given that Firefox has changed and jaws has not (I'm still using
2021), I suspect they would say "take it up with the Firefox devs".

Not only that, when a problem arises, FS says that their agents can't help with programs we may use with JAWS. They can only help with JAWS. This defeats the purpose of calling FS when there is an interaction problem between JAWS and programs that run on top of JAWS.

Man..I've never called JAWS tech support, but from posts here and things I've heard from elsewhere, they do sound a little bit unhelpful and kind of counter-productive, parroting out the same routine lines instead of getting down to tryign to solve someone's problem, which for sure is going to be linked with some kind of application th ey are trying to use.

Well, I'm not using the latest NVDA, and can access the context menu with taht screen-reader. So perhaps FS could change the implementation of something or other. What I'm saying is that yes, Firefox changed, but it can't all be in their camp/their responsibility.
Whatever though. I'm still using an old version of jFW myself so I'd be happy if Mozilla fixed whatever it is, too.

I know I started it, but I wasn't expecting any responses. Either way, if we want to discuss Freedom Scientific's tech support, we should start another thread rather than continue to derail this thread. It's even possible that this isn't appropriate for this discussion to be on this list, and for that I apologize to the list for my mistake.

Hadn't thought of that. My previous message describes turning off the
virtual cursor after you hit the context menu key; so far that has worked
flawlessly and I consider it a very minor issue to simply hit one extra
keystroke.
