Moderated my bank's login section - JAWS can't read it but narrator can

Steve Nutt

To be honest though Bill, both Narrator and NVDA are better at many web apps than JAWS is.

It needs a bit of a refresh there.

All the best

Hi, Curtis. There are plenty of apps and websites that don't play friendly with Narrator. When a program is created, there will always be trade off's, advantages and disadvantages to using that program versus other programs. Just because Narrator works well in this situation, that doesn't mean that Narrator is best at working with a multitude of programs and websites. FreedomScientific has to balance performance among so many programs and websites that occasionally, there will be situations in which a different strategy will need to be used to correct an accessibility problem with a program or website when using JAWS.

Robin, I think I may have a solution for this, though I am living somewhere else and not a Key user.

With JAWS, do the following:

In the website, focus your arrow key at the sign on button. It doesn’t matter if it says expanded or collapse.

Press JAWS key +Z to turn off virtual cursor, and use the tab or shift tab to get back the focus at the sign on button.

If the button is collapse, press space to expand it.

Then press tab and you should be able to go through those menu, like sign on, forget password, and enrol. Just use space or enter to activate the button of your choice, then press JAWS key +Z again to turn on virtual cursor.

Hi,

I’ve appreciate some input here. It  seems that my bank changed something on the home page to get to the sign-in section. I cannot find the login section at all with JAWS  PC or JAWS cursor. I asked an AIRA agent for a visual description of what was happening. With that, I found that Narrator can find the section, but not JAWS.  I’ll describe the layout from the AIRA agent’s perspective, then   I’d appreciate knowing two things from some of you: I primarily use MS Edge, but did also try this on Chrome, with the same result.

Using JAWS, go to www.key.com.  Press B until you hear Sign-on button. If you click this, it says that the button is now expanded.  JAWS cannot find anything, reading instead a photo description of a woman and a mural. I even tried redrawing the screen and routing my JAWS cursor to the PC cursor.  What AIRA and Narrator show is that a little section appears below this expanded sign-on button where it mentions Online Banking, has buttons to Enroll and Sign-On and links for forgot your password.  Narrator reads these and I can click the sign-on button to open the actual log-in area.

  1. Are you able to find the expanded section with JAWS?
  2. We talk about always having two screen readers for cases like this, but do you think it’s reasonable that I’m still pushing back to the bank tech team to say this doesn’t work with JAWS?  I sent in feedback over the weekend, before I had even tested it with Narrator, so I cannot say that the site is completely inaccessible,  but I’m disappointed that JAWS isn’t reading that section once expanded.

Hi,

Here works everything perfectly if JAWS is set to auto forms mode. If JAWS is set to semiautomatic or manual forms mode then I have to turn with JAWS key+z forms mode on.

System: Windows 11, JAWS 2022, Microsoft Edge.

Thanks for confirming what I got, Mike. Over the weekend, because I hadn't thought to use Narrator, I remembered the www.key.com/login had worked in the past, and that did work still, so I was able to do what I needed. I normally use the mobile app, but need the website occasionally. I'll report the findings.

Robin

I got the same results with Jaws and Narrator as you did.
The final version of Window-Eyes released several years ago was also able to load the logon page with the edit boxes for the user id and password.

The direct page for the logon screen is

https://ibx.key.com/ibxolb/login/index.html#/login

When I placed that in both Edgte and Chrome, it did load as it should.

So if you bookmark that page, or create a desktop short-cut to it, you should be able to get to the needed screen.
The first 2 edit boxes on the page are for your userid and password.

Alternatively, you could get to the screen in Narrator, unload narrator, and load Jaws and work from there.

Hope this helps!

That’s interesting, Vicky. I turned off the virtual cursor, but didn’t think to tab and, of course, arrowing didn’t work, so I wasn’t’ sure what to try.

Using Windows 10 with Chrome and JAWS 2022 on a laptop, turning the virtual PC cursor off with JAWS key plus Z and then tabbing several times gets me to the Sign On button where I can press the spacebar to activate it. It then turns the virtual PC cursor back on and puts me in the place where I could enter my user ID if I had an account.

Hi,

I asked an AIRA agent for a visual description of what was happening.

I got the same results with Jaws and Narrator as you did.
The final version of Window-Eyes released several years ago was also able
to load the logon page with the edit boxes for the user id and password.

The direct page for the logon screen is

https://ibx.key.com/ibxolb/login/index.html#/login

When I placed that in both Edgte and Chrome, it did load as it should.

So if you bookmark that page, or create a desktop short-cut to it, you
should be able to get to the needed screen.
The first 2 edit boxes on the page are for your userid and password.

Alternatively, you could get to the screen in Narrator, unload narrator,
and load Jaws and work from there.

Hope this helps!

Subject: my bank's login section - JAWS can't read it but narrator can
