Hello,
Suddenly this afternoon I am unable to retrieve my Gmail on my laptop running Outlook and Windows 10. I can send and receive mail on the iPhone with that affected account and also through the Gmail web interface. But when I try to download mail in Outlook I get a prompt for a password and even though I typed in the correct password it doesn’t except it. I’m not sure how to begin diagnosing this problem. If you are accessing your email via IMAP, and in all probability you are, the easiest thing to do is to nuke the account in Outlook 2019 and then promptly create it again. As part of this you will be walked through the OAUTH step of verification, too, and things will go back to normal. The problem is not with Outlook 2019, per se, which is entirely capable of using Google's OAUTH access method. The problem would appear to be that whenever that account was initially set up someone had the "less secure apps" setting turned on in the Google account and used only good, old-fashioned userid and password as the login criteria. The days of userid and password alone as login criteria for email clients and other software that routinely "hits" your account is rapidly disappearing, and not just for Google. That just happened to me, and Microsoft's disability office was able to remote in and fix it. It was something they were aware of, a recent change by Google that requires some tweaking. I have Outlook 2013, and it hit me 2 days ago. Microsoft said that it was only involving Outlook connections, and would hit all in that group eventually. The fix involved the technician going into the control panel mail, and doing things I had never heard of before, so I cannot provide any steps, just to call Microsoft at 800-936-5900.

I suspect the answer will end up being related to generating an application specific password (which really is, as Bill White has pointed out, more accurately described as a security key, but that's not what Google chose to call it) or to them tricking Outlook into running through the OAUTH part of modern verification. Assuming they are using the app-specific password thing, it would require them to access the said Gmail account to turn on 2FA if the owner hasn’t done so. Hopefully someone can shed light on this.
